Get Outlook.com to Only Accept Mail From Known Senders

Make your Outlook.com inbox exclusive and block content from unknown senders

Don't wade through email from people you don't know in your Outlook.com Inbox. With a small configuration tweak, all mail that isn't from people in your address book or safe senders list will go to the Junk Email folder. You can also block attachments, photos, and links from people you don't know.

Instructions in this article apply to Outlook.com and Outlook Online.

Make Outlook.com Accept Mail Only From Known Senders

To have Outlook.com allow only mail from people you know:

  1. Select Settings.

  3. In Settings, select Mail > Junk email.

  4. In the Filters section, select the Only trust email from addresses in my Safe senders and domains list and Safe mailing lists check box.

  5. Select Save.

Block Content From Unknown Senders

Block attachments, images, and links from anyone who is not on your Safe Senders list. This prevents the download of attachments and images that may contain worms or viruses. It also disables links that may lead to unsafe websites.

  1. Select Settings.

  3. In Settings, select Mail > Junk email.

  4. In the Filters section, select the Block attachments, pictures, and links from anyone not in my Safe senders and domains list.

Block Senders

You can also block individual senders by email address. This option works much like the Safe senders list.

  1. Select Settings.

  3. In Settings, select Mail > Junk email.

  4. In the Blocked senders and domains section, select Add.

  5. Enter the email addresses that you want to block and press Enter.

  6. Select Save.

Add Email Addresses to the Safe Senders List

Add important senders to your Outlook.com People address book, so they are known senders. Or, add individual addresses or entire domains to your Safe Senders list.

  1. Select Settings.

  3. In Settings, select Mail > Junk email.

  4. In the Safe senders and domains section, select Add.

  5. Enter the email addresses that you want to allow and press Enter.

Add People to Your Address Book

If you set your Inbox to only allow trusted emails, email from new contacts may be delivered to the Junk Email folder. To deliver these emails to your Inbox, add these contacts to your address book. To find the address book, go to the View Switcher and select People. Then, select New contact, enter the contact information, and select Save.
