How to Chat in Full Screen Mode on Facebook

Messages you write on Facebook are, by default, located in a small window on the bottom of the screen. This sometimes has its benefits, but if you want to chat in full-screen mode, you have to switch over to a different part of the website.

There are two ways to use Facebook Messenger in a pop-out-like window. The first is through the small chat window on Facebook.com, and the other is to access Facebook's other website, Messenger.com.

The bigger chat screen on Facebook lets you do all the same things you can do on the smaller one, plus more. You can search your conversations, change the "like" Emoji, disable chat notifications, and more.

If you're already on Facebook, the easiest way to open a full-screen chat window is to do it from the smaller chat window.

  1. Click the chat you want to make larger.
  2. Click the small gear icon at the top right corner of that box.
    1. Note: You won't immediately see this icon if you're starting a new message with someone from the New Message link at the top of Facebook. However, you can make it show up by writing something to the other person.
  3. Click Open in Messenger.

Facebook's other website, called Messenger, is available at Messenger.com and shows the same screen as the one that the above instructions will take you to, only you don't have to go through Facebook first.

  1. Open Messenger.com.
  2. Log in to your Facebook account.
  3. Click a conversation to view it in this bigger mode.
