Here is an extreme close-up of the Multi-Channel Audio Inputs and Speaker connections. The Multi-Channel Audio Inputs allows direct analog audio connections between a DVD/Blu-ray Disc/HD-DVD player using the 5.1/7.1 channel analog audio connection option. In addition, this connection group can be used to access SACD and DVD-Audio content as well.

The speaker connections can accommodate several types of setups.

Here are some of the speaker setups that can be used:

1. If you want to use a full 7.1 Channel setup, you can use the Front, Center, Surround, and Surround Back connections.

2. If you want to have the VSX-1018AH-K power a 2nd zone system, you can use the Front, Center, and Surround connections to power a 5.1 channel system in your main room and use the surround back speaker connections to power a Second Zone two-channel speaker system.

3. If you want to Bi-Amp your front main speakers (some speakers have separate terminals for the tweeter/midrange and woofer sections). You can use the Main and Surround Back speaker terminals to accomplish this.

In addition to the physical speaker connections, you will also need to use the menu setup options of the receiver to send the correct signal information to the speaker terminals, based on what speaker configuration option you are utilizing.

Pioneer VSX-1018AH-K 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver - Remote Control

Pioneer VSX-1018AH-K 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver - Remote Control
Pioneer VSX-1018AH-K 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver - Remote Control. Photo (C) Robert Silva - Licensed to About.com

Here is a close-up photo of the remote control provided for the VSX-1018AH-K. As you can see it has a long and relatively thin design. The remote incorporates a lot of functions, with some buttons doing double duty, but the layout is farily typical.

The top section of the remote features the input select buttons. The next section, which is numbered, primarily provides direct chapter access for Blu-ray Discs and DVDs, but they also provide access to other functions, depending whether you want to control the receiver or source players. Moving down, you will see several buttons within a white-rectangular border. These controls are for a television.

Continuing down the remote are the menu navigation controls and buttons.

Finally, the bottom portion of the remote features the DVD and Blu-ray Disc transport buttons, some of which also perform additional functions.

Although this remote is very comprehensive, I did find that it was difficult to use in the dark, as it has very small buttons. If you haven't memorized the location and function of each button, it is hard to work just by feel. Also, you might need reading glasses to be able to read the buttons.

Final Take

With the VSX-1018AH-K, Pioneer has incorporated such features as three HDMI video inputs, HDMI video and audio switching with analog-to-HDMI video conversion and 1080p upscaling, advanced HDMI audio capabilities, iPOD compatibility, and both XM and Sirius satellite radio, at a very reasonable price.

Having had a chance to get a hands-on with the receiver, I can say that it performs its primary role very well, providing a satisfying listening experience from both movie and music source material.

The VSX-1018AH-K offers convenient and abundant features. One of my favorite features is the front mounted USB port for connecting an iPod. In addition, the MCACC automatic speaker setup system provides fairly accurate results.

This is one of the least expensive receivers to offer 1080p upscaling. The VSX-1018AH does a good job (see video upscaling test results).

In addition, while you should always place a home theater in an setup that allows good air circulation, the VSX-1018AH-K remains fairly cool after hours of operation.

This home theater receiver definitely deserves your attention. I give it a 4.5 out of 5 Star Rating. Check out my Short and Full Reviews.

The Pioneer VSX-1018AH-K has a suggested retail price of $599, but may be found lower: Manufacturer's Site.
