How to Use Photoshop Plugins in IrfanView

IrfanView supports a mix of free and paid plugins, including for Photoshop

The popular, free image viewing appliation IrfanView supports many Adobe Photoshop plugins that use the 8BF file type. However, these plugins must be added through a separate installer file — most don't ship with the standard IrfanView program.

These instructions work with IrfavView version 4.5.3.

Get the Photoshop Plugins

To access these additional plugins, you must download and install them. IrfanView supports both 32-bit and 64-bit applications; pick the plugin installer that matches the bit depth your installed version of IrfanView.

Use the Photoshop Plugins

After the plugins program is installed, access them through the Image > Adobe 8BF Plugins menu. The plugins integrate into IrfanView's user interface, under the Image menu. Activate them as you'd use any other plugin or filter.

Use the Adobe 8BF Filters control panel—accessed by pressing Ctrl+K—to chain different 8BF filters together to create composite filters. This advanced technique helps to automate common projects that consistently use the same plugins applied in a specific sequence.

Add Additional Plugins

Put 8BF files from other locations inside of the IrfanView plugins folder. The 64-bit version of IrfanView keeps Adobe-compatible 8BF plugins in the C:\Program Files (x86)\IrfanView\Plugins\Adobe 8BF folder.

IrfanView's support for Adobe Photoshop plugins isn't perfect. If you acquire 8BF files outside the approved installer, add them to the plugins folder one at a time to ensure you don't crash IrfanView. If the program doesn't like a plugin, just delete it from the folder.
