PCDiskEraser v5.0

A Full Review of PCDiskEraser, a Free Data Destruction Software Tool

PCDiskEraser is a bootable data destruction program, which means you can run the software before your operating system starts, leaving nothing behind for file recovery tools to uncover.

Because the software doesn't need to be installed on your computer to run, you can use it to permanently destroy all the data on a hard drive or partition, even the "main" one that has the OS installed on it.

This link to PCDiskEraser will start the download of the ISO file immediately after clicking it.

This review is of PCDiskEraser version 5.0. Please let us know if there's a newer version we need to review.

More About PCDiskEraser

Unlike file shredder tools, which let you permanently delete specific files and folders from your computer, PCDiskEraser erases absolutely everything on an entire hard drive or partition.

The data sanitization method that's used by PCDiskEraser is DoD 5220.22-M.

All you have to do to get started using PCDiskEraser is download the program in ISO format (link above), burn the ISO file to a disc, and then boot to the disc before the operating system starts up.

If you don't have an optical drive and would like PCDiskEraser on a flash drive instead, see How to Burn an ISO File to a USB Drive for help. You'll then need to boot from the flash drive to get the program started.

Once PCDiskEraser has been loaded on the computer, choosing what to wipe is very easy. You just have to select the hard drive or partition you want to erase. The hard drive's description and size are easily readable so you can clearly make sure you've chosen the correct one.

After selecting Start, you'll be asked if you're sure you want to erase that hard drive or partition. Selecting Yes on that prompt will immediately start the deletion process.

A progress bar will then be shown in the following screen, with an Exit Me button you can click if you wish to stop PCDiskEraser.

Pros & Cons

PCDiskEraser is simple and effective, but it does have a disadvantage when compared to similar data wipe programs.

  • Really easy to use
  • Relatively small download size (~60 MB)
  • Easy to identify the hard drives (so you don't wipe the wrong one)
  • Makes you confirm the wipe before it starts

  • Mouse input didn't work for me

My Thoughts on PCDiskEraser

The only real downside I see to using PCDiskEraser is that I had to use the tab, spacebar, and arrow keys to select the buttons and drive because it wouldn't let me use my mouse. However, this may not be the case for everyone else who uses it.

Other than that, the wipe method is secure, the program is dead simple to use, and it doesn't take much time at all to download the ISO image.
