This article explains how to pair two Echo Dots for stereo sound, including instructions for listening in stereo once they’re connected.

How Do I Pair Two Amazon Echo Dots?

To pair two Amazon Echo Dots, you need to first set them up with the Alexa app on your phone. Once they’ve been set up, you can create a special kind of device group within Alexa which combines the two Dots as a stereo pair. This pair can then be used to listen to music and other content in stereo, but only with compatible apps.

This same process will also work with two Amazon Echo devices, but each stereo pair has to consist of two matching devices. So you can make a stereo pair of Echos or a stereo pair of Echo Dots, but you can’t mix and match.

Here’s how to pair two Amazon Echo Dots:

  1. Set up each Echo Dot if you haven’t already done so.

  2. Place the Echo Dots in the positions where you’ll be using them, ideally at least a few feet apart.

  3. Open the Alexa app on your phone, and tap Devices.

  4. Tap the + icon in the upper right corner.

  5. Tap Combine speakers.

  9. Verify the speaker positioning is correct by tapping each speaker, then tap Next.

If the speakers are reversed, tap SWAP SPEAKERS to make sure the left channel is on your left and the right channel is on your right.

  10. Tap the name you want to use for your stereo Echo Dot pair.

Select the name that best fits where you’ll use the speakers. You can change this name later if there are no appropriate options.

  11. Tap Save.

  12. When you see a message like Office was created, your Echo Dot pair is ready to use.

Can You Connect Two Echo Dots?

You can connect two Echo Dots in a stereo pair, but there are some restrictions. It doesn’t work with the first or second generation Echo Dot, but it does work with every subsequent generation. Stereo pairing is also available for a variety of other Echo devices, including Echo Studio and Echo Plus, but you can’t mix and match. That means you can create a stereo pair of third generation Echo Dots, or a stereo pair of Echo Studios, but you can’t make a pair of one Echo Dot and one Echo Studio.

The only exception is you can add an Amazon Echo Sub to a stereo pair of any other two compatible Echo devices. For example, you can combine an Amazon Echo Sub with a stereo pair of third generation Echo Dots.

The other restriction, when connecting two Echo Dots, is they need to be in the same room and no more than about three feet apart. If the speakers are too far apart, you’ll be unable to create the stereo pair until they are moved closer together.

How to Use an Amazon Echo Stereo Pair

After you’ve created an Amazon Echo stereo pair, you can set the pair as your audio source in compatible apps. You can also go through the same process outlined above, but add the stereo pair to a compatible Fire TV. When you do that, you can use the stereo pair as the audio output for the Fire TV. That option isn’t available with every Fire TV device though.

Amazon Echo stereo pairs work with a limited number of apps, like Amazon Music, TuneIn, and Spotify.

Here’s how to use an Amazon Echo stereo pair with a compatible app:

  1. Create a stereo pair using the procedure outlined above, if you haven’t already done so.

  2. Open an app compatible with Echo stereo pairs, like Amazon Music.

  3. Tap the cast icon (square with a wireless symbol).

  4. Tap the name of your Echo stereo pair, i.e. Office.

  5. When you see the message Connected to Office, music will start playing through your stereo pair.
