The simple answer is that Outlook for Mac is not free. You can not download Outlook on your Mac for free unless you grab it as part of a free 30-day trial version of Office 365.

Office 365 doesn't include just Outlook but also other applications like Word, Excel, Publisher, Access, OneNote, and PowerPoint.

When you download the Office 356 30-day trial you will have to give your credit card number in order to get it, but you can cancel anytime, or of course continue to use it for a monthly charge.

The free download allows you to use Outlook and the other Office 365 programs for 30 days on up to five Macs or PCs, and Office mobile apps on up to five tablets and five phones.

You will get up to 1 TB of cloud storage per user for up to five users. If you have multiple devices and users in your household, you may find it of value. It also continuously updates rather than having to purchase and install additional updates.

If you prefer, you can re-enable full functionality by purchasing a copy of Office for Mac or the product key that will allow you to continue using it.

You don't have to buy MS Office just to store files online. There are lots of ways to store and back up your files online.

Free Outlook for Mac Alternatives

Outlook has its advantages, especially if you are used to using it at work or home over the years. The cross-functionality between Mac, PC, tablet, and phone apps can also ease any learning curves. However, it isn't the only choice, especially if you're going to have to pay for it.

For free Mac email programs and services that do not expire, consider these choices:

  • Top Free Mac Email Programs: These email clients can be used with POP and IMAP to handle your email expertly, retaining email message copies on your Mac rather than on the cloud or webmail servers.
    • An advantage of these clients is that you can often migrate your messages to a different email client if you decide you want to change in the future. You can likely import your current Outlook messages into a new client, and vice versa. If you have multiple email accounts, look for clients that can handle multiple addresses.
  • Top Free Web-Based Email Services: If you don't need an offline email client on your Mac, you can use these free webmail services to manage your email online from any web browser or computer, regardless of the operating system (i.e. whether it's Mac, Windows, etc.)

A disadvantage of some of the services is that you will have to endure advertising, although there may be paid options that are less expensive than the Microsoft Office fee. They also might have functions you prefer over Microsoft Outlook.
