The Best Xbox One Game Gets Even Better

Ori and the Blind Forest is one of the best games of the current generation.  Period.  It looks and sounds amazing, tells an incredibly moving and emotional story, and has some of the tightest 2D platforming gameplay of the last 15-20 years.  We absolutely loved it in our original review, and though highly enough of it that we named it our 2015 Xbox One Game of the Year.  Now, a year after its original release, Ori and the Blind Forest gets even better with a brand new Definitive Edition.

How To Buy Ori and the Blind Forest Definitive Edition

The Ori and the Blind Forest Definitive Edition is available in a couple of different ways.  First, however, it is important to note that this new Definitive Edition is replacing the original version for new buyers.  If you didn’t already buy the original, you can’t buy it at all now.  Technically, this isn’t a big deal since the Definitive Edition is better and the one you want anyway, but Achievement Hunters will miss out since the two versions are separate games – thus they have separate achievement lists.  The Definitive Edition has mostly the same list, but adds some extra achievements for the new content to bump the gamerscore up to 1250.  I know, I know, achievements and gamerscore don’t matter, but some folks like them (like me!) and being able to play an awesome game twice and get the rewards twice is a good feeling that, sadly, won’t be available for new players jumping into Ori now.

Okay, pointless rant over.  Like I said, Ori and the Blind Forest Definitive Edition is available in two ways.  The first is that if you don’t already own the original release, you can buy the Definitive Edition for $20.  The second is that if you already own the original, you can pay $5 to  “upgrade” to the Definitive Edition for just $5 (and you also can still play the original release too).

Why Should You Buy Ori Definitive Edition?

Why would you want to upgrade?  Well, the Definitive Edition of Ori and the Blind Forest has a lot of new content on top of the already great original release.  There are new story elements to flesh out the characters better and make you care even more about Naru, Ori, Kuro, and Gumo (so it’ll hit even harder when the emotional moments happen …).  There are two new areas to explore – each with their own unique themes and puzzles – as well as two new abilities to help you explore the world.  These new areas and abilities are accessed early on, which allows you to use those new abilities in the rest of the game so the old areas feel fresh again.

The Definitive Edition also adds new difficulty modes.  In addition to the standard “Normal” setting that the original release used, you can now select Easy or Hard and even a One Life Mode.  Fast Travel has also been added this time, which will allow you to backtrack to areas so you can collect any collectibles and items you missed on your first time through an area.

The game also has a Theater Mode now that not only allows you to watch in-game cinematics, but trailers, “making of” content, and more.

Bottom Line

All in all, Ori and the Blind Forest Definitive Edition is a wonderful love letter to an amazing game.  If you haven’t already played Ori, you absolutely must buy the Definitive Edition.  It is one of the best games ever and easily one of the best of the XONE / PS4 generation so far.  And if you have already played the original version of Ori and the Blind Forest, the Definitive Edition is STILL a must buy experience.  This game is just so amazing that it deserves to be played multiple times.  Falling in love with Ori and the Blind Forest all over again is a great feeling and I highly recommend the Definitive Edition for a purchase.
