How to Create Folders to Organize Your Mail in AOL

Never lose an important email in your inbox again

You act on some emails immediately. Some you trash right away, but then there are those you want to keep for later but know they'll get lost in the jungle that is your AOL inbox. Solve the problem by making saved email folders for each person or organization you receive email from. Everyone is different, but you may want a folder for mom, a folder for the civic league newsletter, a folder for all work-related mail, or a folder for last month's mail. If you keep your saved AOL emails organized in folders, you'll always be able to find them. Just tap the email in your inbox and then send it to one of the folders you create. First, you need to set up the folders to hold the messages.

Create Folders to Organize Your Mail in AOL in a Browser

After you've decided how many folders to set up and what to call them, you ready to start making saved email folders for organizing your AOL email:

  1. Go to AOL.com in a browser on your computer.
  2. Click Mail in the left panel.
  3. Move your cursor over Folders in the left panel and click the + sign that appears next to it.
  4. Type a name of the new email folder and click Enter or Return.

The folder is created immediately and is listed under the Folders category. Repeat this process for each of the new folders you are making.

To save email to your new folders, open your AOL inbox and click the box next to an email or open the email in a window. Click More at the top of the mail screen and select a folder under Move to in the drop-down menu that appears.

If you use the AOL app on an iOS or Android smartphone or tablet, you can create mail folders wherever you are, and if you are linked to other devices via a cloud service, any change you make to your folders on one device is duplicated in your other devices. Here's how:

  1. Launch the AOL app on your mobile device.
  2. Tap the Mail icon at the bottom of the screen (it resembles an envelope).
  3. Click the + symbol next to Folders in the list at the left side of the screen.
  4. Type a name for the new folder and tap Return to create the folder.
  5. The folder is created, and a confirmation screen appears. Tap OK.

Now you can start saving messages to the newly created folder. Just select or open an email in your AOL inbox and select Move to in the options at the bottom of the screen. The location varies among mobile devices. You may need to click a More icon to see the option. Tap the folder where you want to move the email.
