For those not familiar with the OPPO Digital brand name, they have a well-deserved reputation for making excellent performing Blu-ray Disc players, that are also built like a tank. Also, they have recently ventured into high-end headphone and headphone DAC/amplifier (High Performance Personal Audio) product categories and are starting to make their mark there as well.

Introduction to the BDT-101ci

As part of their Blu-ray Disc player tradition, OPPO has added the BDT-101c Blu-ray Disc Transport to its product line. The BDT-101c is designed to take excellent performance and build quality, and optimize it for the high-end consumer and professional custom installation market.

The BDT-101ci is different from OPPO's other current players in that is it built on a modular platform, that enables it to be easily customized for specific home theater setup needs.

To start, just was with their other current players, the BDT-101ci is playback compatible with both 2D and 3D Blu-ray Discs, DVDs, CDs, HDCDs, SACDs, and DVD-Audio Discs and the transport also provides bitstream output for Dolby Atmos/DTS:X, and both bitstream output and onboard decoding capability for Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS-HD Master Audio.

In its "stock form" the BDT-101ci provides one HDMI output for audio/video, as well as digital optical/coaxial, and two-channel audio outputs for audio only output options. However, if you want a second HDMI output, or would like to add 5.1/7.1 multi-channel analog audio output capability, users need to purchase, and have an authorized dealer install, additional plug-in modules to add those capabilities.

On the other hand, three USB ports are already provided for playback of compatible media files stored on compatible USB devices, such as Flash Drives.

An Ethernet/LAN port is provided for access to BD-Live content associated with select Blu-ray Disc titles, as well as allowing access to downloadable firmware updates and compatible media content stored on a local network (PCs, Media Servers). However, the BDT-101ci does not provide built-in Wifi capability, but OPPO does offer an optional USB Wifi Adapter.

It is also important to note that other features that are not included in the BDT-101ci that are typically found on the rest OPPO's Blu-ray Disc player line, are internet streaming (that means no Netflix, YouTube, CinemaNow or other popular services), and there is no HDMI/MHL input. Also, unlike OPPO's BDP103D and 105D, Darbee Visual Presence is not included.

On the other hand, the BDT-101ci incorporates custom control options that home theater installers desire for high-end home theater setups, including RS232 and IP control (Crestron Compatible), Switchable rear IR sensor for flexible IR blaster/emitter installation, three custom picture adjustment presets, and VRS ClearView video processing. Also, in addition to the provided remote control, the BDT-101ci has large, finger guarded, front panel buttons.

For additional flexibility, an optional module can be installed that provides HDBaseT capability when installers are faced with dealing with situations that necessitate long distance HDMI connectivity. In addition, there is an optional rack mount kit available.
