Nvidia Firmware Update Fixes Blank Screen Issue

Problem affects RTX 3060 and 3080 Ti graphics cards

Nvidia has released a new firmware update for its RTX 3060 and RTX 3080 Ti graphics cards that fixes a screen blanking problem with DisplayID monitors.

According to a post on Nvidia’s website, the update ensures compatibility between the graphics cards and the DisplayID standard. Before this, computers with a DisplayID monitor would show a blank screen while booting until the operating system eventually loaded.

The current DisplayID standard came out in 2017, and when used alongside DisplayPort cables, can achieve higher graphical quality than the HDMI standard.

However, if someone wanted to open the BIOS firmware to fix the incompatibility issue, they were unable to do so because the screen was blank.

Before grabbing the update, Nvidia recommends downloading its GPU Firmware Tool to detect whether or not the new firmware is actually necessary.

If needed, the tool will alert you and provide the option to download the latest firmware.

Alternatively, Nvidia lists some options for people to try if they’re experiencing a blank screen. Suggestions include booting the computer using HDMI or DVI, booting with a different monitor, or using a different graphics card.

If all these options fail, Nvidia recommends running the tool, but suggests making sure all apps are closed and no OS updates are pending. Currently, the issue is only with the 3060 and 3080 Ti cards, with no mention of any others.
