It has a massive library of TV shows and movies, including a lot of brand new originals and old favorites, but it doesn't have a student discount. If you're a student trying to get by on a tight budget, there is not a Netflix student discount to help ease that burden. Students looking to stretch their entertainment dollar have a few options. Netflix offers a free trial period, and there are ways to gain access to additional free trials. There are also several fantastic alternatives that have student discounts, and some free TV and movie streaming sites that can save you even more money. Your eligibility for a student discount might depend on your school. This guide covers popular services like Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, YouTube, and CBS All Access. Using Netflix Free Trials to Catch Up Netflix not offering a student discount can make it tough to fit a subscription into a tight budget, but there are a few ways to get Netflix for free. The easiest is to sign up for a free trial, catch up on the shows you're interested in, and then cancel. Netflix doesn't allow multiple free trials, but you can sign up again if you use a different email and billing method, like a prepaid credit card. If you cancel your subscription and wait, Netflix will often send you an offer for another free trial a few months down the line. Other than using free trials, the next best way to access Netflix for cheap is to ask a parent or friend for a profile on their account. You might even consider offering to pay the difference to upgrade to a plan that would let you stream without interrupting their viewing. There's also the option to find fellow students who want to share a new account. Netflix Alternatives With Student Discounts Netflix creates a lot of original content, so there is no direct replacement for the service. You won't find Netflix originals anywhere else. Netflix also has buys the rights to stream a lot of uber-popular television shows and movies they didn't make themselves, but that's always changing. If you don't have your heart set on a specific Netflix exclusive, some other streaming services offer student discounts. These services have exclusive shows and movies, just like Netflix, and they all compete to offer the best selection possible. Here are the best alternatives to Netflix that offer student discounts: Amazon Prime Student: Amazon Prime's student plan provides all of the regular Prime benefits at a significant discount. In addition to streaming TV shows and movies, you'll also get music, free shipping, and more.YouTube Premium: This service removes ads from YouTube, gives you access to YouTube Premium shows and movies, and also includes access to YouTube Music.Hulu and Spotify Bundle: Hulu doesn't have a student discount, but you can sign up for the Spotify student discount and get Hulu for free.CBS All Access: This is the basic CBS streaming service provided at a discount to students. What is the Amazon Prime Student Discount? Amazon Prime Video is part of Amazon Prime. This service started as a membership program with the sole benefit of providing two-day free shipping, but it has expanded to a lot more. What We Like Comes with a generous free trial period. Prime Originals include movies and TV shows you can't get anywhere else. Includes free Amazon shipping and other benefits. What We Don't Like Eligibility ends after four years of membership or when you graduate (whichever comes first). Manual verification, without a .edu email address, can take up to five days. The Prime Video interface on the website is poorly designed. With an Amazon Prime Student subscription, you get free shipping, access to Amazon's free streaming library of movies and TV shows, the Amazon Prime Music streaming service, and a variety of exclusive deals designed just for college students. This service includes a very generous free trial period, after which you pay about half of what the regular Amazon Prime subscription costs. After four years, or if you can't verify your enrollment, your student subscription converts to a regular one. Signing up for Amazon Prime Student requires access to a .edu email address. If your school doesn't issue email addresses to students, you may still be able to sign up through a manual verification process. What is the Hulu Student Discount? Hulu is a streaming service that provides access to a lot of TV shows on the same day, or within the same week, that they first air. It also has original TV shows that you can't get anywhere else. It doesn't have a student discount, but it is available in a student bundle with Spotify and Showtime. What We Like You get access to Hulu, Spotify, and Showtime for about half the price of Hulu alone. Hulu produces original programming that you can't get anywhere else. What We Don't Like There is no student discount just for Hulu. There is no option to switch to an ad-free Hulu plan, and this discount doesn't work with the Hulu with Live TV service. When you sign up for the Spotify student discount, you also get free access to Hulu and Showtime. The Hulu subscription is the ad-supported plan, and there is no option to pay extra to upgrade. The overall cost for all three services is about half of what you would pay for Hulu alone. Spotify uses SheerID to verify student enrollment, so if you've already verified through SheerID for any other discount, you won't have to do so again. What is the YouTube Premium Student Discount? YouTube Premium is a service that removes advertisements from regular YouTube videos, gives you access to original shows and movies, and includes the YouTube Music service. When you sign up, you can choose between a family plan discount and a student discount. What We Like No ads on regular YouTube videos. Includes YouTube Originals that you can't watch anywhere else. What We Don't Like The interface for finding and watching YouTube Premium shows is poorly implemented. Has far less premium content than competing services. The YouTube Premium student discount saves you about 60 percent off the regular price, and it includes everything that you get with a standard subscription. It requires annual verification, so if you graduate or leave school, you'll have to cancel or switch to a regular subscription. YouTube uses SheerID to verify enrollment, so signing up is easy if you've ever verified through SheerID before. What is the CBS All Access Student Discount? CBS All Access gives you access to a live stream of your local CBS affiliate and on-demand access to a vast catalog of TV shows. It's more limited than streaming services like Netflix or Hulu, but it's also less expensive. Plus you can take advantage of the CBS All Access student discount to save even more. What We Like Cheap live CBS television and on-demand content. Includes access to exclusive shows like Star Trek Discovery. What We Don't Like Only works with the limited commercials plan. Only has current CBS shows and content from the CBS back library. The CBS All Access student discount saves you 25 percent off the regular price of a subscription plan. It's only available with the limited commercials plan, so you can't use it with the more expensive plan that gets rid of commercials altogether. Aside from that, it's the same as a full-priced subscription. CBS uses the SheerID service to verify enrollment and provide you with a student discount. If you've ever verified through SheerID before, you'll be able to sign up for this service with your existing credentials. Free Alternatives to Netflix If you want to save even more money, there are several free alternatives to Netflix that allow you to stream TV shows and movies without paying anything at all. Some of these sites even let you watch without creating an account, let alone paying a monthly fee. Sites like Tubi, Crackle, and Vudu all provide viable alternatives to Netflix without charging a subscription. These services are typically supported by ads, just like broadcast television.
