For the motion graphic designer, there are few places where it’s possible to meet the head of Video Copilot, win a Blackmagic camera, talk shop with the CEO of Maxon over a beer and break bread with the team from Red Giant Software. In fact, there isn’t anywhere where all of that is possible.

Nowhere but the MediaMotion Ball.

Touted as “…the premier event for post production, motion graphics, 3D and anyone in the production field attending NAB”, the MMB, as it’s affectionately known, brings about 400 like-minded folks for an evening of networking, an epic buffet dinner, brilliant keynote speeches and a raffle to end all raffles.

The MMB was first held in 1998, and has moved venues over the years as the attendee list has grown, and today’s ball is bigger and better than ever. That doesn’t mean attendees have to be part of the motion graphic elite either. This event welcomes everyone with open arms.

This event, hosted by Carey Dissmore and an all-volunteer team, has grown from a dinner to let email group members meet face to face to the meeting place for an entire industry. Editors, motion graphic designers, 3D artists and colourists mix with software developers, hardware manufacturers and top tier sponsors. The result is an environment where curious show attendees have a rare opportunity to press flesh with the companies that make their work possible without the traffic of the show floor.

The MMB also brings out the rockstars of the post production world. Past presenters, sponsors and keynote speakers have included Brian Maffitt, Andrew Kramer, Academy Award winner Doug Blush, Seth Worley, multiple-Emmy Award winner Jesse Averna, Eran Stern, Mark Christiansen and many others.

Where else could you stand in the buffet line and ask Andrew Kramer about working on Star Wars: The Force Awakens? Nowhere else.

Attendance isn’t free, but ticket prices are a steal, considering what a ticket gets you. For $55 you get entrance to the MMB, a truly epic sit down buffet dinner, on-stage updates from the event sponsors, wine with dinner and entry into a huge prize draw.

For those so inclined, there is also a cash bar.

The night runs like this: doors open at the Monte Carlo at 5:30pm on Monday April 18th, and you will walk into post production heaven. Live music fills the room, and a sponsor pavilion is laid out to let you get a closer look at some of the software and hardware products that pro editors, motion graphic designers and 3D artists use every day. Grab a drink, check out the latest gear Blackmagic Design introduced at NAB but actually get close enough to touch it, chat with your favorite visual effect artist, then grab a comfy seat and get ready for dinner. At around 7:15pm tables will be invited up to the buffet to fill their plates with excellent food and get ready to enjoy a casual dinner while sponsors talk about their latest products, all the while drawing winners for the legendary raffle.

The MediaMotion Ball usually wraps up by 9:30pm or a bit later and attendees head out into the Las Vegas night for other industry gatherings, or to simply rest up for another big day on the show floor.

Whether After Effects, Cinema4D or Rampant Design Tools are your daily bread and butter, or if you simply have a passing interest in post production and feel like a fun night out in a casual, warm and welcoming environment, the MediaMotion Ball might be right up your alley.

about.com will be covering Desktop Video and NAB 2016, including motion graphics and the MediaMotion Ball from Las Vegas this April.
