The upcoming free DIRECTV streaming service is yet another way to consume free content (with ads, of course).

It looks like DIRECTV is making a play in the increasingly crowded world of free streaming. They just announced a new platform called MyFree DIRECTV, set to launch on November 15. This service will offer viewers a curated selection of free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channels and a library of on-demand content, accessible online, on mobile devices, and on some smart TVs and streaming devices.

The company appears to be positioning this DIRECTV streaming service as more than just a freebie. As they put it, MyFree DIRECTV will also serve as a "starting point for consumers looking to experience DIRECTV." They could be hoping to use this free service to upsell viewers to their paid offerings.

The platform will feature DIRECTV's Your TV content aggregation tool, which personalizes the viewing experience by highlighting favorite and frequently watched programs. It will offer various content, including sports, entertainment, kids and family programming, and news. They plan to expand their channel lineup throughout next year and beyond. Some titles we already know will make the cut include Ancient Aliens, The First 48, Court Cam, Storage Wars, and Ice Road Truckers.

With FAST services generating billions of dollars in the U.S. this year, it's no surprise that DIRECTV is jumping on the bandwagon. Viewers are increasingly drawn to free, ad-supported options, and DIRECTV is looking to grab a slice of that pie. They're also touting their "best-in-class advertising sales team," which suggests a focus on monetizing the DIRECTV streaming platform through targeted advertising.

While the press release emphasizes the benefits for viewers, it's clear that DIRECTV also sees this as an opportunity to expand its reach and potentially convert free users into paying subscribers. It will be interesting to see how MyFree DIRECTV fares in the already crowded streaming space.
