The Most Romantic Wii U Games

Can Video Game Characters Find Love?

There aren’t a lot of Wii U games that one could describe as romantic, but a few, with some effort, can be squeezed into a romance list. This is not a typical list of great romances - with its cast of witches, toads, and spirits, this list could almost double as top Wii U games for Halloween” - but these games do have a just a touch of love and romance in them if you look very, very closely.

Since the Wii U is backward compatible, you can also round out any romantic gaming using my list of the top romantic Wii games. You can decide for yourself which console is the more romantic one.

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Blackwater
The gamepad perfectly realizes Fatal Frame's unique camera weapon. Nintendo

This game is about all types of love – between lovers, friends, and family members – and how every kind of love will make you dumb as a box. The game is, primarily, about people escaping from a terrible place, going back to save someone they care about, and then having that person go back to save someone else, and then the first person going back to save one or the other of them. The moral of the game? If you love someone, tie them up and never let them out of the house. (Disclaimer: About.com does not endorse holding your loved ones captive.) More »

Bayonetta 2

bayonetta 2
Nintendo

With her skin-tight leather outfit, gun boots, and caustic comments, Bayonetta is not a typical romantic heroine. But you can see her taste for love whenever she has to wipe out a nest of the game’s wicked angels in order to take down a barrier. Once the angels are dead, Bayonetta will blow a lipstick kiss that flies forth and shatters the barrier. She might show her soft side more if she ever runs out of things to kill.

Year Walk
A horse spirit surrounded by the children it has drowned waiting for your assistance. Simogo

You’re going to have to play all the way through Year Walk to find the game’s romantic side. And then you’ll have to start all over. I can’t tell you where the games’ dark take on love is in this bizarre adventure game without spoiling the story, but it’s there, in its own weird way. ‘Nuff said.  More »

Thomas Was Alone
Curve Digital

While the puzzle game Thomas Was Alone is, mechanically speaking, a game about getting angular shapes from point A to point B, a beautiful script makes it into a lovely story about a group of people with different personalities learning to overcome their differences and work together for the common good. Along the way, two of those characters - a small cube and a long rectangle – fall in love. It sounds rather geometric, but love doesn’t always have to be round and squishy. More »

Captain Toad
The puzzle levels from 3D World are their own thing now. Nintendo.

What is love? If you learn about love through video games, you are likely to believe it involves rescuing someone who has been kidnapped. Therefore, mutual love must be when two people successively save one another. That arguably makes Treasure Tracker the ultimate video game romance. It’s also a game that celebrates the equality of the sexes, with both damsels and gentlemen in distress; what could be more romantic than that? More »

guacamelee
Combat is fast and furious and very, very colorful. DrinkBox Studios

Guacamelee begins with the protagonist dying in an attempt to save the woman he loves. Then he comes back from the dead to continue the quest to save her. Whatever you do for your special someone, it’s going to pale in comparison with that. More »
