Can You Have More Than One YouTube Channel?

YouTube limits its users to a single channel, tied to their login name. However, a Brand Account serves as a separate type of channel that you can use for business or brand purposes.

Your Options for Several Channels

If you only want to keep family videos out of the public eye, you can use your regular YouTube account and adjust the privacy settings of individual videos. However, if you have two different audiences for your content, it's probably wiser to set up different channels.

In the past, you would create a separate YouTube account for each audience. That method still works. Create a new Gmail account for every YouTube channel you want to create.

However, that's not the only — or necessarily the best — option. The other way to get multiple YouTube channels is to make Brand Accounts.

What Are Brand Accounts

Brand Accounts are a little like Facebook pages. They're separate accounts that are managed by proxy by your personal account — usually for business or brand purposes. The connection to your personal Google account isn't displayed. You can share management of a Brand Account or manage it by yourself.

Google Services Compatible With Brand Accounts

You can use some of Google's services with your Brand Account, including:

  • Google+
  • Google Photos
  • Google My Business
  • YouTube

If you've created a Brand Account in any of those services and gave your personal Google Account permission to manage it, you can access the Brand Account on YouTube already.

How to Create a Brand Account

To create a new Brand Account in YouTube:

  1. Log on to your YouTube account on a computer or mobile device.
  2. Go to Your Channel List.
  3. Click Create a new channel. (If you already have a YouTube channel you manage, you'll see it in Your Channel List and you just need to switch to it. If you already have a Brand Account but haven't set it up as a YouTube channel, you'll see the name listed separately under "Brand Account." Just select it.)
  4. Give your new account a name and verify your account.
  5. Click Done to create the new Brand Account.

You should see a message "You have added a channel to your account!" and you should be logged in to this new channel. You can manage this new YouTube channel just like you do your personal account. Any comments you make on videos from this account show up as having come from your Brand Account, not your personal account.

Consider adding different channel icons—the user profile pic in YouTube—to distinguish which account you're using.

Switch between accounts by using the Channel Switcher or by clicking on the user profile picture.
