Mojang has officially announced the long awaited addition of Minecraft to Nintendo’s console, the Wii U. With fans patiently waiting and crossing their fingers, players only have a few more days to wait before adventuring in Minecraft on a new platform. Mojang released the news in a video on the TeamMojang YouTube channel, having Jeb (Minecraft’s Lead Creative Designer), giving the unexpected news in an immediate way, “Minecraft is coming to Nintendo Wii U.” Within seconds, the screen fades and the words “Coming Soon” fills the screen. Minecraft: Wii U Edition will be available within the Nintendo eShop for $29.99 in North America.

Coming soon is an understatement for what Mojang has done. A more appropriate tagline is “Coming Before Christmas”. Minecraft for Wii U will be officially released on December 17th, 2015. Just in time for the holidays. Upon release, Minecraft will be bundled with six of Mojang’s most popular add-on packs, included with a Festive mash-up one. Just like the other platforms of Minecraft, Minecraft: Wii U Edition will be receiving free updates to the game. Mojang reminds users that all DLC is completely optional and reinforces the idea that “You can have significant amounts of fun playing Minecraft without spending extra cash.” The addition packs you will receive are the Battle and Beasts (1 and 2) Skin Pack, the Natural Texture Pack, the City Texture Pack, the Fantasy Texture Pack, and the Festive Mash-up Pack.

Off-TV Play

Mojang

If you are unfamiliar with the concept of Off-TV play, hopefully this explanation brings you up to speed. Nintendo’s gamepad for the Wii U will support Minecraft in an Off-TV play format. As Nintendo’s gamepad features a built-in screen, you will be able to play Minecraft without the TV being on a channel specifically for the Wii U. The TV doesn’t even need to be on, as a matter of fact. This can make things in the household a lot better for everybody if a specific family member would like to watch a TV channel while you are playing a game.

Hopes

Mojang

Being a very frequent user of Nintendo products, I hope that the Gamepad for the Wii U is integrated into the gameplay in some way, shape, or form. For example, using the screen to craft would be very advantageous over using a D-Pad or Joystick. Nintendo of America’s President and COO, Reggie Fils-Aime has been quoted, saying “Wii U players will have plenty of reasons to keep coming back to this iconic gaming experience.” Making statements like this only gives me hope for launch.

As this is also a console version of the game, hopefully it doesn’t stray too far off in terms of playability. Assumptions are that it will be the exact same version of Minecraft as featured on the other consoles. An interesting mechanic that would be very helpful (if the gamepad has any special features when not being used for Off-TV play) is to allow users with a 3DS to utilize their handheld system as a controller. This feature has been seen in games such as Super Smash Bros for Wii U (and for 3DS). Nintendo has announced that they and Mojang will be working on content for Nintendo fans in the coming future.

In Conclusion

Mojang

If you’re contemplating buying Minecraft: Wii U Edition, you can more than likely say it’s a very safe buy. Based on past console versions of the game, I can’t see how this would be negatively different. If anything, this could potentially be the best version of the game using potential Gamepad features. Minecraft for Wii U will be available on December 17th for $29.99 on the Nintendo eShop.
