Pop-up windows are used for a variety of purposes; for example, for a banking website to show a canceled check. However, many pop-ups contain unwanted ads. Most browsers provide a way to block these pop-ups. Apple's Safari browser offers an integrated pop-up blocker on the Windows and Mac platforms, as well as on the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.

You may need to disable the pop-up blocker to access necessary pop-ups. Alternatively, install plug-ins that suppress tracking and pop-ups for more control over individual sites and browsing sessions.

Block Safari Pop-ups in Mac OS X and macOS Sierra

The pop-up blocker for Mac computers is accessible through the Web content section of Safari's settings.

  1. Go to the browser menu and select Safari.

  2. Choose Preferences.

Or press the Command+, (comma) keyboard shortcut.

  5. To do the same when visiting other websites, select When visiting other websites in the lower-right corner of the window. If this check box is selected, Safari's integrated pop-up blocker is enabled.

  2. Scroll down the list and tap Safari.

Safari's Pop-up Blocker Settings on Windows

Apple has discontinued Safari for Windows, and Safari 5.1.7 was the last version made for PCs. If you still have Safari on your PC, use one of two methods to block pop-ups.

The first is to use the keyboard combination Ctrl+Shift+K. Here are the steps for the second method:

  1. In the top-right corner of the Safari window, select Settings (the gear icon).

  2. In the Settings menu, choose Block Pop-Up Windows.

Another way to enable or disable the pop-up blocker in Safari is to select Preferences > Security > Block pop-up windows.
