This tutorial is only intended for users running the Internet Explorer 11 Web browser on Windows operating systems.

Internet Explorer 11 provides an easy-to-use interface that lets you enable, disable, and in some cases delete any browser add-ons that are installed. You can also view detailed information about each add-on such as publisher, type, and file name. This tutorial shows you how to do all of this and more.

First, open your IE11 browser. Click on the Gear icon, located in the upper right-hand corner of your browser window. When the drop-down menu appears, click on Manage add-ons. IE11's Manage Add-ons interface should now be displayed, overlaying the main browser window.

Found in the left menu pane, labeled Add-on Types, is a list of different categories such as Search Providers and Accelerators. Selecting a particular type will display all respective add-ons from that group on the right side of the window. Accompanying each add-on is the following information.

Add-on Details

Toolbars and Extensions

  • Name: The full name of the add-on is displayed in this column. These names can be sorted alphabetically by clicking on the column header.
  • Publisher: The publisher's name (i.e., Microsoft Corporation) of the respective add-on is displayed in this column.
  • Status: The current status of the respective add-on is displayed in this column - Enabled, Disabled, New or Default. When an add-on is Disabled, its functionality is unavailable.
  • Architecture: 32-bit, 64-bit or both.
  • Load time: Represented in seconds, displays the amount of time it takes to load the respective add-on into memory.
  • Navigation time: Whenever IE renders a new Web page, active add-ons can add to the amount of time the process takes. Navigation time represents the average amount of time the individual add-on appends to that overall process.

Search Providers

  • Name: The search engine's name, accompanied by its icon.
  • Status: Notes whether or not the individual search engine is configured as the default option within IE.
  • Listing order: Displays the order of preference in which the installed search providers are displayed within the browser. This value is editable by using the Move Up and Move Downlinks found in the bottom section of the window.
  • Search suggestions: When enabled, suggested search keywords from this provider will be displayed as you type in the address bar or search box. This functionality can be turned off using the Disable suggestions link.

Accelerators

  • Name: Shows the name of the accelerator, broken up into categories such as Email and Translate.
  • Address: The domain where the accelerator originated (i.e., bing.com).
  • Category: The aforementioned category value is shown in this column.

More information about each add-on is displayed at the bottom of the window whenever that respective add-on is selected. This includes its version number, date/timestamp, and type.

Show Add-ons

Also found in the left menu pane is a drop-down menu labeled Show, containing the following options.

  • Currently loaded add-ons: The default selection shows only those add-ons which are actively running.
  • All add-ons: Displays all add-ons installed within IE11, no matter their current status.
  • Run without permission: Lists add-ons which are allowed to run without explicit user permission, such as Microsoft's XSL Template.
  • Downloaded controls: Shows all downloaded ActiveX controls.

Enable/Disable Add-ons

Each time an individual add-on is selected, buttons are displayed in the bottom right-hand corner labeled Enable and/or Disable. To toggle a respective add-on's functionality on and off, select these buttons accordingly. The new Status should be automatically reflected in the details section above.

Find More Add-ons

To find more add-ons to download for IE11, click on the Find more... link located at the bottom of the window. You will now be taken to the Add-ons section of the Internet Explorer Gallery website. Here you will find a large selection of add-ons for your browser.
