A Full Review of Macrorit Data Wiper, a Free Data Destruction Tool

Macrorit Data Wiper is a free data destruction program that runs in Windows to wipe a whole hard drive or a single partition on any internal or external hard drive.

The program is straightforward, very easy to use, and provides a foolproof way of confirming that the drive you want to erase really is the drive you want to erase.

This review is of Macrorit Data Wiper version 4.6.0, which was released February 22, 2019. Please let me know if there's a newer version I need to review.

More About Macrorit Data Wiper

Macrorit Data Wiper v3.2.1 in Windows 8

Unlike some other data destruction programs, Macrorit Data Wipe can not erase the primary hard drive that has an Windows installed to it. It can, however, erase any other internal or external drive that isn't being actively used by Windows. This is because a data destruction program must lock a drive before erasing it, and it can't lock the primary hard drive while it's in use.

For example, if you have two internal hard drives installed, one with Windows on it and the other with a group of files, you can install Macrorit Data Wiper to the Windows hard drive and erase the other drive without any issues.

However, if you only have one drive installed and it's hosting Windows, you can not use this program to erase it. For that, you must use a program that runs from a disc, like DBAN or CBL Data Shredder.

The data sanitization methods Macrorit Data Wiper can use to wipe data includes the following:

To wipe a hard drive using Macrorit Data Wiper, just choose any of the wiping methods from the top of the program, select the partition or whole disk you wish to destroy, and then click the Wipe Now button.

You'll be required to confirm the operation by typing "WIPE" in the prompt, and then click the Start button to begin.

Macrorit Data Wiper works with Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP, as well as Windows Server 2012, Home Server 2011, Server 2008, and Server 2003.

Pros & Cons

Though Macrorit Data Wiper is easy to use it does have some drawbacks:

  • Very easy to use
  • Entirely portable (doesn't need to be installed)
  • Works with internal and external drives
  • Wipes SSDs and mechanical drives
  • Must confirm a wipe before it starts
  • Can wipe what's in the Recycle Bin
  • Separate 32-bit/64-bit program

  • Not free for business use
  • Can't be used to erase the primary hard drive
  • Not all visible features are usable in the free version
  • Can be installed to the Windows operating system only

Thoughts on Macrorit Data Wiper

In short, if you want a data destruction program that can erase a drive full of files, like a flash drive, Macrorit Data Wiper is a great option. The interface is easy to use and there's almost nothing negative to say about the features.

The only thing I don't like about Macrorit Data Wiper is that one of the data wipe methods, the one called Macrorit's algorithm, isn't usable even though it's listed alongside the other sanitization methods. You have to upgrade to a paid version of the program to use it.
