Linksys WRT54GL Default Password

WRT54GL Default Password & Other Default Login Info

Linksys WRT54GL Router
Linksys WRT54GL Router.

Both versions of the Linksys WRT54GL router use the default password admin. This password is case sensitive, which means you should spell it just how I did here, with no capital letters.

The WRT54GL doesn't have a default username, so when asked for it, just leave that field blank.

Use the IP address to access the router through a web browser. This particular IP address is actually used with most other Linksys routers too.

This router comes in two different hardware versions - 1.0 and 1.1. However, both versions use the same IP address, username, and password I just mentioned.

Help! The WRT54GL Default Password Doesn't Work!

If the default password for your Linksys WRT54GL doesn't work, it most likely just means that it's been changed from admin to something more secure (which is actually a good thing).

You can restore the custom password that you don't know, back to the default admin password by resetting the router back to its factory default settings.

Resetting the WRT54GL router is easy. Here's how:

  1. Turn the router around so you can see the back side where the antennas and cables are plugged in.

  2. Make sure the power cable is firmly plugged in.

  3. On the left side of the back of the WRT54GL, near the Internet plug, is the Reset button. Hold that button down for 5 seconds.

The easiest way to press the Reset button is with a paperclip or something else that's small enough to fit in the hole.

  4. After you let go of the Reset button, wait another 30 seconds or so for the router to reset.

  5. Before you start using the router again, unplug the power cable for a few seconds and then plug it back in.

  6. Wait for another 30 - 60 seconds for the router to fully boot back up.

  7. Now you can access the WRT54GL router through a web browser at the default IP address: Since the password has been reset, use admin to login to the router.

  8. It's important to change the default password of the router now that it's back at admin, which isn't secure at all. Store the new password in a free password manager if you're concerned that you'll forget it again.

At this point, if you want to re-enable the wireless internet and other custom settings like DNS servers, you'll have to reenter that information. This is because resetting the router doesn't just remove the password but also any other custom changes you've made to it.

After you've made the changes you want to make to the router, it'd be a good idea to make a backup of the router's configuration so that you can restore the backup in the future if you ever have to reset the router again. You can learn how to do this on Page 21 of the user manual (there's a link to the manual below).

What to Do When You Can't Access the WRT54GL Router

By default, you should be able to access the WRT54GL router through the address. If not, it just means that it's been changed since the router was first set up.

All you really need to know to find the router's IP address is the default gateway of a computer that's currently connected to the router. You don't have to reset the whole router like you do when you've lost the password.

See How to Find Your Default Gateway IP Address if you need help doing this in Windows. The IP address you find there is the one that you should enter in the web browser's URL bar to access the router.
