Best 1080p LED/LCD TVs 40-Inches and Larger

Flat panel televisions are now the norm on store shelves and in consumers' homes. Although LCD and OLED TVs are available, LCD TVs are actually the most popular selling TVs. Although 4K gets all the hype, there are still some great 1080p TVs available. If you can't quite make the jump yet, then the Samsung UNK6250 series might just the ticket.

Behind is stylish thin bezel curved screen, the UNK6250 Series LED/LCD TVs feature an LED-edge-lit panel (supported by micro-dimming), 1080p native display resolution, and 120Hz ClearMotion processing. The sets deliver a very good image quality and provide all the connectivity (including 3 HDMI and 2 USB inputs) you need to plug in your Blu-ray Disc player, cable, and/or satellite box and USB compatible devices.

Also using either a wired Ethernet connection or convenient Wifi, the UNK6250 series provides access to Netflix and a host of internet streaming services via Samsung's Smart Hub/Smart Apps, built on the Tizen platform, as well as content stored on your PC or compatible media server.

This series also provides a full web browser, as well as built-in Bluetooth (compatible with Bluetooth headsets and Samsung Bluetooth-enabled Soundbars), Screen Mirroring (Miracast - SmartView 2.0).

NOTE: This set is available in the 49 and 55-inch screen sizes with the same features and performance.

The Sony KDL-W650D series are stylish1080p LCD TVs that are a complement to most room decor.

In terms of picture quality, they incorporate Direct LCD backlighting (no local dimming, however), for even black levels across that entire screen, as well as a 60Hz screen refresh rate supplemented by XR240 Motion Flow processing. Additional image quality support is provided by Sony's XReality Pro video processing and upscaling feature.

Physical connectivity includes 2 HDMI and 2 USB inputs for accessing audio, video, and still image content from compatible USB devices.

In addition, the KDL-W650D series provides network connectivity via both Ethernet

KDL-40W650D (40-inches), KDL-48W650D (48-inches), and KDL-55W650D (55-inches)

Vizio's D-Series 40-inch and larger 1080p TVs offer up a lot of features and good image quality in a variety of screen sizes.

For added picture quality support all the sets include 120Hz refresh rates with added Clear Action motion processing for a 240Hz-like effect (depending on the model), built-in WiFi and Vizio's Internet Apps Plus Smart TV platform (depending on model) and Full Array LED Backlight.

The inclusion of Full-Array backlighting provides black levels that are deeper and more uniform across the entire screen surface, unlike edge-lit technology used in many inexpensive LCD TVs which is subject to white "blotching" and "corner spotlighting". Also, to provide even greater control of blacks and whites, the Vizio D-Series full-array backlit sets in screen sizes 40-inches and up feature from five to 16 independently controlled active LED local dimming zones.

For Audio, all of Vizio's D-Series TVs have built-in speakers, but can easily be connected to an, can also be connected to an external audio system, such as a sound bar or home theater receiver via either analog, digital optical, HDMI Audio Return Channel audio output options (or all three - depending on model).

Vizio's D-Series TVs are available in screen sizes ranging from 40 to 70-inches.

TCL has a line of the 1080p LED/LCD TVs that offer a little something extra that is great for cord-cutters or those that get most of their TV program via the internet: The Roku operating system is built-in (no extra plug-in box or stick required). One example is TCL's S305 Series.

The Roku system offers access to over 3,500 internet streaming channel offerings, including the usual selections, such as Netflix, but also includes additional services, such as SlingTV. Via connection to an internet router using either Ethernet or WiFi, users can access an abundance of online TV, movie, and music streaming content without connection to an external media streaming box, plug-in media streaming Stick, antenna, cable, or satellite service (although connections are provided for those content access options as well).

However, keep in mind that even though the TV will allow you access to a lot of channels - not all of the channels are free, some may require a pay-per-view fee or a pre-paid monthly subscription.

Additional connectivity also includes HDMI and other inputs and you need to connect your Blu-ray Disc, DVD player, or other video source device, a well as audio output options for connection to your home theater audio system.

A USB port is also included for access to digital media content on flash drives or other compatible devices.

For added convenience, you can also set back on your couch and share audio, video, or still image content on your smartphone and see/hear it on the big TV screen.

TCL's S305 Series Roku TVs come in several sizes (49, 43, 40, 32, and 28 - the 32 and 28 inch sizes feature 720p resolution).

It is always great to have the latest and the greatest, but sometimes the price is just too high. On the other hand, an affordable TV that provides solid basics may just the right solution for your viewing pleasure.

With that in mind, consider the 55-inch LG 55LJ5500 TV.

First off, you don't get 4K or 3D, this set provides 1080p display resolution additionally supported by LED backlighting and 60Hz screen refresh rate, which provides bright, colorful images.

However, along with strong basic performance and physical connectivity (including 2 HDMI and 1 USB ports), the LJ5500 also includes LG's WebOS 3.5 Smart TV operating system that features easy-to-navigate access to streaming content (including Netflix, Vudu, HuluPlus, Amazon Instant Video, YouTube, Pandora, Spotify, and more...) via Ethernet or Wifi connections.

Also, if you download LG's TV Plus App to a compatible smartphone or tablet, you can wirelessly share photos, videos, and additional apps on the TV.

Although for best TV listening, connecting to an external sound system is preferred, the LJ5500 does feature a built-in stereo speaker system with virtual surround which provides a wider sound field that you might expect.

If you are looking for a basic 1080p LCD TV, but with a large screen, you have to check out the Sharp LC-60N5100U. This set incorporates a 60-inch screen within the slim thin-bezel frame.

The core features of the LC-60N5100U include 1080p native display resolution, 60Hz screen refresh rate, and LED lighting.

The 60N5100U also features 3 HDMI inputs, as well as network connectivity via Ethernet or Wifi connection. This provides access to internet content from providers, such as Netflix. YourTube, and Pandora. The 60N5100U can also access media content stored on flash drives (accessible by 2 USB ports) or your PC.

The Sharp Brand (for TVs) is owned and manufactured by Hisense.

The SunBrite SB-5570HD is a specially designed 46-inch LCD TV that is optimized for outdoor use. The SB-5570HD incorporates a fortified anti-glare screen, sealed wiring compartment, and both a built-in cooling and heating system, enabling it to handle temperatures from minus 24 degrees to 122 degrees Fahrenheit. This set is also designed to resist rain, dust, insects, and salt air.

The SB-5570HD has a 1080p display resolution, supported by a 60Hz refresh rate, and 4,000:1 contrast ratio. Inputs include two HDMI, Composite, S-Video, and PC monitor inputs. In addition, a built-in ATSC/QAM is provided for reception of over-the-air digital and HD broadcasts signals, as well as unscrambled HD cable signals.

These days, with the big emphasis on internet streaming and smart features, it is getting harder to find a no-frills, basic TV. However, there are still some sets available. One example is the Samsung UN40K5100.

Although this set does not have include smart features, internet streaming, Bluetooth, and other advanced options, it does have a stylish edge-to-edge screen design along three sides, with larger bezel along the bottom that houses the front firing speaker system, the K5100 houses 40-inch LED-edge-lit LCD panel with 1080p native display resolution, wide color enhancer, and 60Hz ClearMotion processing.

Connectivity includes 2 HDMI, shared composite/component, and USB inputs so you can plug in your Blu-ray Disc player, cable, and/or satellite box. A USB port is also included that allows you to view photos and videos, or listen to music stored on compatible Flash Drives, cameras, and camcorders.

Of course, the set also includes a built-in tuner for reception of over-the-air TV broadcasts if that is needed.

The K5100 also includes a digital optical audio output for connection to an external audio system, but for those that don't have this option, the set also includes a front firing stereo audio system built-in.

The UN40K5100 was introduced as part of Samsung's 2016 TV line-up, but has continued the model into 2017.
