What We Like

Mario Forever Galaxy is a continuation of Buziol Games' immensely popular platformer remake of Super Mario 3: Mario Forever. In Mario Forever Galaxy Evil Bowser has kidnapped the Princess Peach and taken her to a far off planet. It's up to Mario and his friends to travel through the galaxies battling Bowser's minions in order to rescue her.

What We Like

  • Single and multiplayer modes.

  • Hero mode allows you to control heroes in first or third person POV.

  • Familiar RTS gameplay and fun.

What We Don't Like

  • Close up character design looks lower quality.

  • Civilizations don't vary much in tactics and gameplay of each feels similar to each other.

  • Troop pathing is a problem at times, with units becoming stuck or not engaging.

Rise and Fall: Civilizations at War is a real-time strategy game set in the first millennium B.C. in which players control either Persia, Greece, Egypt or Rome as they try to conquer the known world.

What We Like

  • Simple gameplay reminiscent of Gauntlet.

  • Improved graphics over the original.

What We Don't Like

  • Game lighting is not rendered in real-time, so not as atmospheric as it could be.

  • AI is not difficult to trap on objects, making enemies easy to defeat.

Alien Breed Obliteration is a top-down shoot'em up freeware action game that is a partial remake of Alien Breed 92 for the Amiga computer system. Players are on a mission to stop an alien invasion, levels are littered with ammo, weapons, powerups, heath bonuses and more.

What We Like

  • Controls work well and allow for quick management.

  • Realistic sounds with good quality.

What We Don't Like

  • Strategy seems less of an asset than brute force in gameplay.

  • For its time, graphics were adequate, but not as impressive as its immediate successor.

Electronic Arts has released the original Command & Conquer Red Alert as freeware. Red Alert is the prequel to the original Command & Conquer and takes place in alternative/parallel timeline in which World War II never occurred. Instead, the Soviet Union rises to power and draws the free world into an alternative World War II.

What We Like

  • Sounds are mood-setting and creepy.

  • Intense action.

  • Very macabre and suspenseful.

What We Don't Like

  • Bugs in the game are frustrating.

  • Can become repetitive and boring.

The survival horror PC shooter, The Suffering has been made available as free download. The free full version offered for free as an ad-supported game sponsored by the US Air Force. Originally released in 2004, The Suffering contains nine levels of horror, multiple endings, and nearly a dozen different weapons.

Command & Conquer

What We Like

  • Classic real-time strategy that holds up.

  • Good replayability by switching sides.

What We Don't Like

  • Not much to dislike about this venerable, genre-defining RTS.

Electronic Arts has made the original and classic Command & Conquer as freeware. Originally released on August 31st, 1995, Command & Conquer launched one of the most popular PC game series ever and the first introduction to the GDI and Nod factions that have been featured in nearly all other C&C games. The download is available directly from the Command and Conquer EA website and is in the form of two ISO images. Complete instructions for installing this Windows 95 game on XP or Vista are detailed on the download site.

What We Like

  • Easy to get into and start playing.

  • Humor makes fun of the MMO genre.

What We Don't Like

  • Repetitive and the fun will wear off relatively soon.

  • Advancement is limited for characters.

Dungeon Runners is an online role-playing game from NC Soft where players take the role of a Fighter, Mage or Ranger on a mission to conquer evil forces within a series of increasingly difficult dungeons.

What We Like

  • Visuals and graphics are good.

  • Physics on display are interesting.

What We Don't Like

  • Little depth to the game, so enjoyment is short-lived.

  • Lots of flying objects can be frustrating, especially when being hit immediately after respawning.

  • Poor framerates with so much happening onscreen.

CellFactor: Revolution is a free computer game from Immersion Games designed to be used with the Ageia PhysX card. The game itself is a sci-fi action shooter where players battle against cybernetic humanoids by taking on the role of one of three characters with unique powers and abilities; Black Ops, Bishop, and Guardian.

What We Like

  • Action is fast-paced and constant.

  • Minimal resources required to play.

What We Don't Like

  • Simple graphics.

  • Gameplay is one-note combat.

Modern War 3 is a free nonstop action game where you fight until you're the last man standing. Wave after wave of enemies are upon you in seconds and only those with quick reflexes will make it to victory. The game allows you to purchase upgrades and new more powerful weapons to help you win. Modern War 3 is available from Caiman free game website, which also has a number of screenshots.

What We Like

  • Lots of items and weapons.

  • Challenging platformer gameplay.

  • Visuals are colorful and nifty.

What We Don't Like

  • Very similar to Duke Nukem.

  • Takes a lot of dying and retrying to complete.

Originally released in 1993 Bio Menace is a side-scrolling action game in which you take on the role of CIA agent, Snake Logan. Mutants have overrun Metro City and it's your job to destroy and find the source of these mutants.
