How We Tested

Our reviewers spent 11 hours testing one of the most popular laser or LED printers available. To really get the full experience, we asked them to consider the most important features when using this printer — from design to printing speed and quality — and we've outlined them here so that you, too, know what to look for when shopping.

What to Look for in a Laser/LED Printer

Speed - If you’re often printing 100-page documents, you’ll want a fast printer that can complete the job before you even have time to refill your coffee. The speediest printers out there deliver around 40 pages per minute.

Capacity - Aside from speed, large print jobs also require large paper capacities so you don’t have to keep refilling the tray. Some trays hold up to 500 pages, but if you’ll be managing smaller jobs, a capacity of 50 pages should be just fine.

Footprint - Printers are some of the bulkiest office equipment out there. Before you buy, consider where you’ll put your printer and how much space it’ll need. If it’s sitting on a desk in your home office, you might want a smaller printer, but if your office has a dedicated printer room, go ahead and buy a standing machine.

Our reviewers thought that setting up this printer was very easy, with one reporting it didn’t take longer than 30 minutes. Our testers also loved its high-quality printing and fast speed, as well as its AirPrint feature: “I can have the printer set up in one room and print it to another,” one reviewer said. “It also has a neat feature in that it has an email address. You can send documents to it via email instead of just through a network connection.” On the flip side, our testers thought that this printer was a bit larger than comparable models and also a bit more expensive. Still, as one of our reviewers put it, “I feel like it’s a good value and worth the money.”
