Introduction To The Klipsch R-20B

The Klipsch R-20B sound bar/subwoofer system was first introduced in late 2014, but, as of 2017, is still an integral part of Klipsch's product line. Find out why it might be good sound bar choice for you. The sound bar portion of the R-20B is 40-inches wide, which makes it a good physical match for 37-to-50 inch LCD, OLED, or Plasma TVs). A separate subwoofer is also provided (more details below).

Sound Bar Speaker Complement

The sound bar portion of the R-20B system houses 2 3/4-inch (19mm) textile dome tweeters paired with two 90° x 90° Tractrix® Horns in a two-channel configuration. The addition of Tractrix Horn technology serves to deliver bright, undistorted high frequencies. The R-20B also includes 4 3-inch (76mm) Midrange/Woofers with polypropylene drivers and copper-colored cones.

Subwoofer

A Wireless Subwoofer (there are no physical connections, except for power) with a 10-inch (254mm) side-firing driver, combined with an additional port (bass reflex design) is provided. The Subwoofer operates on the 2.4GHz transmission band. However, it must be pointed out that this subwoofer can only be used with the R-20B sound bar system, or other compatible products designated by Klipsch. You cannot use it with other branded sound bars or home theater systems.

Power Output

Power output information for the R-20B is stated as 250 watts peak (continuous power output will be lower). What this means is that in normal operating conditions, the 250 watt peak output will only take place as a response to extreme changes in source content, and for brief time periods (such as explosions, thunder, lighting, etc...)

Frequency Response

In order for a sound bar to produced good sound quality, it needs to produce a wide frequency range. The R-20B system has a stated frequency response of 32.5Hz to 20kHz (Entire System). No Crossover Frequency info provided.

Audio Decoding and Processing:

In terms of audio decoding, the R-20B system incorporates Dolby Digital surround-sound decoding, as well as Additional 3D Virtual Surround processing provided all sources that widens the sound field beyond the physical borders of the sound bar.

However, it must be pointed out that if you have a DTS-only source (such as some DVD and Blu-ray Discs), you may have to set your source device to output in PCM in order for the R-20B to accept the audio signal as no DTS Digital Surround decoding option is provided.

Audio Inputs

The R-20B provides 1 digital optical and 1 set of analog stereo (RCA) audio inputs. Also, for additional content access flexibility, the R-20B is also equipped with built-in Bluetooth, which provides wireless access to content stored on smartphones, tablets, and other compatible devices.

Additional Features

Front mounted onboard controls and LED status indicators are provided. Having onboard controls can come in handy if you misplace the provided wireless remote control.

Accessories Provided

As stated above the R-20B comes with a compact Wireless remote control (remote commands can also be learned by many existing TV remotes), one digital optical cable, rubber feet for shelf or table mounting, wall mount template, and AC power cords for the sound bar and subwoofer.

Dimensions and Weight

  • Sound Bar Dimensions (WDH): 40-inches (1015.8mm) x 2.8-inches (71mm) x 4.1-inches (105.1mm)
  • Subwoofer Dimensions (WDH): 9.1-inches (230mm) x 18-inches (457mm) x 13.7-inches (349mm)
  • Weight: Soundbar - 8.5 lbs. (3.9 kg), Subwoofer - 26 lbs. (11.8 kg)

The Bottom Line

The R-20B incorporates built-in amplification, audio decoding, audio processing, both analog and digital audio inputs, Klipsch's trademark Tractrix Horns that deliver clear sound, and also of important, a pleasing exterior design. Also, since the subwoofer is wireless, it can be placed easily in your room without the need for a long connecting cable (however, you still need to plug it into AC power).

However, unlike some sound bars, the R-20B does not have any HDMI connections or video pass-through capabilities. To connect HDMI-enabled audio/video devices, such as a Blu-ray or DVD player, you will have to make a separate audio connection to the Klipsch R-20B, in addition to the HDMI or other video connections you might need to make to the TV.

The lack of built-in HDMI connectivity also means that for Blu-ray Disc content, you will not be able to access Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks. However, you will be able to access standard Dolby Digital audio.

If you are looking for a modest, no-hassle, sound system to enhance your TV viewing experience, but don't want to deal with a lot of speakers, cables, and wires, give the Klipsch R-20B a listen and see if it fits your needs. Buy From Amazon
