Famed loudspeaker maker Klipsch has brought their innovative horn-loaded speaker technology into the Dolby Atmos environment via their Reference Premiere speaker line.

What Dolby Atmos Is

For those unfamiliar with Dolby Atmos, it is an object-based surround sound encoding/decoding format that, for home theater, combines the traditional 5.1 or 7.1 channel horizontal speaker layout common in most home theater setups with height channels, which can be accessed via speakers installed in the ceiling, or via vertically firing speakers that bounce sound off the ceiling and back down to the listening area.

The Klipsch Dolby Atmos Reference Premiere Line allows for the latter approach, which is more convenient to install, as it does not require cutting holes in the ceiling and running wires through a wall to reach ceiling speakers. Also, it is important to point out that the vertical firing speaker approach requires a flat ceiling with between a 7 to 14 ft height, as well as both a Dolby Atmos-equipped Home Theater Receiver and Dolby Atmos-encoded Content are required for the full listening experience.

The Klipsch Dolby Atmos Speakers

The Klipsch Dolby Atmos-enabled speaker line consists of three models, the RF-280FA, RP-140SA, and the RF-450CA that was first introduced at the 2015 CES, but are still in Klipsch speaker line as of 2017. Also, two additional speakers were added in the line since, the R-26FA and the R-14SA.

RF-280FA and R-26FA

The RF-280FA and R26FA are floor standing speakers that integrate both front firing and vertical drivers.

The front drivers direct sound into listening area, while the vertical driver's project sound upward so it reflects off the ceiling and back down to the listening areas, in order to provide the overhead portion of the Dolby Atmos listening experience.
