Who is Jeff Bezos?

Most everyone has heard of Amazon, the largest retailer on Amazon with literally millions of products and customers. However, not many people are familiar with Jeff Bezos, the person who actually came up with the idea of Amazon, revolutionizing the way we view Internet commerce and how we shop for what we need. Jeff Bezos is the founder of Amazon, the largest retailer on the Web, created in 1994.

Bezos graduated from Princeton with a degree in electrical engineering and computer science. After graduating from Princeton, Bezos started work on Wall Street in his chosen field of computer science. Early on in Web history, he recognized the opportunity for online shopping, and created as a simple online bookstore, which then grew by leaps and bounds into a Web presence with many retail categories.

How did Amazon get started?

Amazon was officially founded in 1994, starting out as a bookstore, but quickly expanding to offer many different products. Amazon - yes, named after the river - originally started as a simple online bookstore, growing quickly within the first couple of years, selling globally within a few months. Amazon went officially public in 1997, and then went on to launch such notable products as Amazon Video, the Amazon Kindle, an electronic device that users can use to read ebooks and other reading material, and the Kindle Fire, an electronic mobile device that users can use not only to read books, but also to view their favorite TV shows, movies, and games. Amazon Prime was offered in 2013, giving existing Amazon customers the chance to purchase items with free shipping with a new subscription model; this very popular offering bundled subscription access to music and videos as well, all on the Amazon store platform.

Amazon is more than "just a store"

Throughout the years, Amazon has acquired several different online retailers and added their distinctiveness to its own, including the Internet Movie Database and Zappos. In addition to offering literally millions of retail items from all over the world, Amazon has also developed in-house products such as the Kindle (an e-book reader), AmazonFresh (online grocery shopping), and Amazon Prime (free shipping). Another in-house product, Amazon Studios, is busily producing original content in the forum of short videos, dramatic series, and other multimedia.

In addition to being best known for founding the world's largest online retailer, Jeff Bezos has received many honors for his accomplishments in online ecommerce, including being chosen as Time's 1999 Person of the Year, Entrepreneur of the Year award, and America's Best Leaders from U.S. News and World Report. Amazon continues to be one of the most innovative online retail stores in the world, with millions of people all over the world ordering something from its virtual shelves every single day.
