Despite a four-year gap between the first and second-generation iPhone SE (2016 to 2020), there are rumors a new iPhone SE will arrive much sooner, in 2022. It might have the same screen size as the iPhone 8, and come with 5G and an upgraded processor. Some say it'll actually be called the iPhone SE Plus, with the SE 3 arriving a couple of years later.

When Will the iPhone SE 3 Be Released?

If a next-year release is true, the next iPhone SE will be announced the same year Apple is expected to give us the iPhone 14. But, it probably won't arrive in the same month.

The first-generation iPhone SE was released in March, and the 2020 version was released in April. Two phones releases aren't a lot to go off, but if Apple plans to stick to the same schedule, it'll be an Apple event next spring that shows off the iPhone SE 2022.

Lifewire’s Release Date Estimate

March or April 2022 sound like a good bet for now. Since the iPhone 14 is expected next fall, we'll assume that an earlier Apple event will be the company's preference for unveiling the SE version.

iPhone SE 3 Price Rumors

The iPhone SE is considered a budget phone. Since the external design will resemble an iPhone from 2017, its price will reflect that older design, and will probably start around $400, like the second-generation iPhone SE.

Pre-Order Information

This phone will likely enter a pre-order phase the same day that it's announced, and it'll probably last a week before shipments and in-store purchases begin.

iPhone SE 3 Features

The best guess right now is that 5G will make its way into this phone. See where you can get 5G in the US if you're not sure.

We'll know more about the 2022 iPhone SE features as we get closer to its launch.

iPhone SE 3 Specs and Hardware

The iPhone SE form factor has historically been based off an older generation iPhone. The 2016 version shared the same physical design as the 2013 iPhone 5S, and the 2020 iPhone SE is identical to the 2017 iPhone 8.

For the third generation, some say it'll go unchanged from the current version, and look like the iPhone 8. This means that the 2022 iPhone SE might come with a 4.7-inch display.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes the two big upgrades for this phone will be 5G and Apple's A15 processor (second-generation iPhone SE uses the A13 processor). 5G was introduced to the iPhone in late 2020 with iPhone 12, so this would be the first SE with the technology. It's unclear right now if the phone will support mmWave (higher frequency radio bands; i.e., faster data speeds) or Sub-6GHz (mid and low-frequency bands).

Other rumors are saying the upcoming iPhone SE will be modeled after the larger iPhone XR from 2018, and it'll have a 6.1-inch display and a side fingerprint scanner. However, according to that tweet from Young, that larger-screen version will arrive after the 2022 iPhone SE, and next year's 4.7-inch version will be called iPhone SE Plus.

Clearly, there really isn't a firm consensus just yet. And it's not clear what's meant by an iPhone SE Plus—is a better processor than the second-generation SE, or the addition of 5G, enough to warrant the Plus moniker?

In a way, this sort of makes sense. The first two iPhone SEs arrived four years apart, which would place the 3rd generation another four years out, in 2024. That's in line with what Ross Young is saying. If another SE were thrown in the middle of this typical release schedule, it makes sense that Apple would opt for a slightly altered name, especially if the hardware is better than 2020's version.

The confusing part is that iPhones with Plus in their name are always physically larger than their non-Plus counterparts, but that's not how this appears to be playing out.

We still have several more months of leaks that could make their way to the surface for some clarity. Check back for updates!
