What We Like

  • Provides beginners with everything a website needs

  • 24/7 support on all channels, including phone

  • Great WordPress hosting with optional expert help

  • Unlimited storage and bandwidth

What We Don't Like

  • There is no uptime guarantee

  • Only a single shared web hosting plan

iPage is a great hosting service for small businesses that are just starting out without a lot of technical expertise or experience. It has low rates, a whole plethora of features, and very helpful support. That said, if you’re running mission-critical sites or enterprise-level sites that are resource-hungry, you should consider upgrading to their VPS and dedicated server options or try another hosting service altogether.

iPage offers numerous web hosting features that are curated to make life easier for those who are new to it and want a simple start. Some highlights include unlimited storage and bandwidth, as well as VPS and dedicated server plans.

iPage was built almost exclusively for first-timers. It gives them a lot of features, including 3 different site builders, simplicity, and e-commerce and WordPress support, all in place. You can also register your domain for free in iPage.

There are also other things that iPage gives first-timers that they won’t get easily on other shared hosting plans, including marketing credits of up to $200, SEO, a full security suite, unrivaled technical support, and much more.

We tested the service, so read on to see our full findings and if it's the right one for you to use to get your site up and running. (Spoiler alert: It's a pretty solid all-around web host.)

Available Levels of Service: Feature-Packed

iPage has only a single shared hosting plan, which is somewhat limiting for those looking for different tiers of service. However, for beginners who are looking for as many features as they can find at an affordable price, it’s a steal. In case, you want specialized WordPress hosting, there are two WordPress hosting plans available.

Essential Shared Hosting Plan:

  • Unlimited storage
  • Unlimited bandwidth that is easily scalable
  • No limit to the number of domain names
  • Unlimited databases (MySQL)
  • Free SSL certificate
  • Free domain for a year
  • $1.99/month for the first 36-month term and $7.99/month upon renewal

WordPress Hosting Plans:

WP Starter

  • Unlimited storage
  • Unlimited bandwidth
  • Customized control panel for WordPress
  • Free domain for a year
  • Preinstalled themes and plugins

WP Essential

  • Unlimited storage
  • Unlimited bandwidth
  • Customized control panel for WordPress
  • Free domain for a year
  • Preinstalled themes and plugins
  • WordPress support from experts
  • SiteLock professional security
  • Automatic removal of malware
  • $6.95/month

Storage: Unlimited

iPage really means it when they say that you get unlimited storage under the shared hosting plan. You will, indeed, have no limits to storage for your website. However, you will have to remain within the limits of what they consider acceptable use. Some people will subscribe to a web hosting plan and use that account to store their files. That does not count as acceptable use, so iPage won’t allow that. However, as long as you’re just running your website, you can expect to have all the storage you need.

Bandwidth: Scales Efficiently With Your Needs

The best part about iPage’s bandwidth is that it is scalable. You don’t have to worry about getting penalties if you go over your limits or face potential performance issues on your website simply because the bandwidth you’ve been allocated is too little.

iPage has been structured in a different way. The architecture will increase your bandwidth when your website starts to consume more resources automatically. The next time your website experiences a spike in traffic because of an ad campaign you’re running does not have to be a headache.

If you think about it, this is an excellent feature for small businesses since their websites will inevitably grow and need more resources. That said, it is understandable that your website may outgrow even this architecture and you will still need more. If that happens, you can ask iPage to upgrade your site to a VPS plan or a dedicated hosting plan. These plans are not visible on their official website, so you’ll have to ask for a quote from iPage.

Registration Process: Quick and Intuitive

You get to register your domain for free for a limited time with iPage. It holds for the first term that you sign up for, which will be a year. After that, you will have to extend your registration at the regular rate.

iPage happens to be a domain name registrar, which means they can both register new domain names and accept domain name transfers from other registrars. On top of that, they allow you to search for an available domain name from their database of over 300 domain extensions. That means you can get pretty much any extension you want for your domain name.

iPage also allows you to preregister domains, where you secure a domain you like before the rest of the public knows about it. You may have to do this at a premium, but at least you get first say on the domain names that are most attractive to you.

Domain & Site Management: Not cPanel, But Still Good

The control panel is a customized version of the vDeck control panel, so this may come as a disappointment to those that prefer cPanel. That said, while the vDeck panel does not offer all of the powerful features of cPanel, it does come with some decent capabilities. You can create your website and check up on it, create e-mail addresses and manage them, view statistics pertaining to your website, manage fila backups, and many other important tasks.

Advanced Options: Three Website Builders at Your Fingertips

To start with, one-click installation of WordPress and many other apps is very easy. Take WordPress, for example, there is a WordPress icon on your control panel that you can click on. Upon clicking it, you will be redirected to the Mojo Marketplace where you will type in your domain name and install WordPress step by step.

The real kicker, however, is the suite of website builders that iPage offers. They offer their own custom website builder along with the Weebly website builder and the Ecwid e-commerce site builder.

iPage Website Builder

This website builder comes preloaded with over 100 templates that are mobile-friendly. All of them are also responsive, meaning your website will automatically adjust itself to the screen size of the user so it displays in an attractive way. You can’t skimp on responsive design these days with mobile internet use rising every day and iPage acknowledges this.

The iPage website builder lets you build a basic website with 6 pages. They have pre-built sections to give you a head start. All you have to do is customize these sections according to your preferences. You can also build your site entirely from the browser; no need to download any applications.

The iPage website builder is quite intuitive, allowing you to add things such as galleries for your images, contact forms, buttons, maps, different typographies and color screens, e-mail signups, a Twitter feed embed, and even Facebook comments.

iPage will also allow you to add metadata and keywords to your website to boost your SEO. They also have a partnership with Unsplash so you have a place to select high-resolution pictures from, no matter what industry you’re operating in.

As for e-commerce, the iPage website builder includes integration with PayPal, which is great if you want to sell stuff on your website. This is the only major feature you will get with the free website builder. If you want more functionality for your e-commerce site, you can consider upgrading to their e-commerce website builder for a fee. The e-commerce builder includes coupon codes, inventory management, a shopping cart, and different payment processors, including Stripe.

Weebly Website Builder

In case you’re already used to Weebly and would prefer to work with something a little familiar, or you just want to try something different, you have the option of the Weebly site builder.

Weebly is often ranked among the best website builders around because of how much functionality it packs and how easy to use.

It certainly looks a little better than iPage’s website builder. However, when it comes to performance, iPage edges it out of the race. On the iPage builder, it’s a little easier to place items where you want them as well delete elements that you no longer need. You also get more customization options with the iPage website builder. iPage also allows you to add selling features on the free version of the website builder while Weebly doesn’t.

On the other hand, Weebly offers some cool automated functions like snapping sections into the most visually appealing places to get your website to look as attractive as possible.

Ecwid E-Commerce Builder

If you want great e-commerce features from a dedicated e-commerce builder, you can try Ecwid. It is well established and widely respected. However, note that since Ecwid is a third-party builder, you can get it on its own, without necessarily having it tied to an iPage hosting subscription. Ecwid allows you to add checkouts and product pages to your site and easily integrates with Weebly, WordPress, and many other site builders. Some plans from Ecwid also come automatically with an SSL certificate, meaning you won’t have to buy one from iPage separately.

Administration: 24/7 Customer Support

Administration is easy. You can add as many accounts as you want, and payment is via credit card or PayPal. The customer service is also exceptional.

If you need tech support or pre-sales questions, you can use live chat. You can also contact customer service 24/7 via phone and online form submissions. They will quickly answer any questions you may have pertaining to hosting services, domain names, online presence, and many more.

Your iPage subscription will also come with RoundCube, an e-mail system that allows you to manage your e-mails. In case you want more features, you can pay for one of iPage’s e-mail hosting plans. The e-mail hosting plans are as a result of a partnership between iPage and Google and Microsoft, so you’ll be getting world-class e-mail hosting.

Price: Great, But it’s Only Promotional

iPage’s pricing is valid for the first term of 36 months. So, the $1.99/month introductory price is only valid for the first 36 months, and only if you pay for the full period. In case you opt for 24 months, you will pay $2.49/month and if you want a term of only 12 months you will pay $2.99/month.

Once the initial term is over, the shared hosting plan will renew at regular iPage rates. For the 36-month term, it will renew at $7.99/month. For the 24-month term, it will renew at $8.99/month, and for the 12-month term, it will renew at $9.99/month.

The Competition: iPage vs Domain.com

The two hosting services have easily comparable shared hosting services. Both of them offer unlimited storage space and scalable bandwidth. They also have hosting plans that are almost at the same price. The promotional rate for iPage is slightly cheaper, but the hosting rates renew at the same price for both services, so you will essentially be paying the same amount eventually either way.

iPage does have a few advantages over Domain.com. For example, iPage does not limit the number of domain names you can host on their cheapest plan. Domain.com does; they only allow you to host a single domain on their cheapest plan. If this is something that matters to you, then you’re better off going for iPage.

And when it comes to VPA hosting, iPage’s plans cost more than Domain.com’s VPS plans by about 60 percent. On the other hand, you get double the storage space on iPage as you would get on Domain.com, no matter what the VPS plan is.

Final Verdict

A worthy consideration for any beginner.

iPage is an excellent service for beginners and those who don’t have much technical expertise but want as many features as possible for their website. It will also be perfect for you if your resource needs aren’t too high and you don’t mind shared hosting. If none of that applies to you, then you should consider more advanced hosting options. That said, iPage is a solid choice as far as we are concerned and it's definitely worth a try.
