Introduction

Office 365 is the flagship office software from Microsoft and it is undeniable that this is the best office suite available anywhere in the world today.

There are free office products such as the LibreOffice suite or even Google Docs but the industry standard consists of Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook. Couple these applications with Access and Notes and you have one truly outstanding set of tools.

In the past Microsoft Office has been a bit pricey but in recent years Microsoft has released a subscription service and renamed the product to Office 365.

For one small monthly payment or indeed an annual fee you can get the latest office suite installed to your computer.

As the sign up process can be a little confusing this guide has been created to show you how to sign up, download and install Office 365.

Requirements

In order to use Office 365 you need to make sure your device has the correct requirements. You can get a full list by clicking here.

Essentially for home use you will need:

  • a minimum of 2 gigabytes of RAM
  • a 1 ghz processor with SSE2 instruction set
  • 3 gigabytes hard disk space
  • Windows 7 or higher.

These instructions will therefore work on computers running Windows 7 and up.

Subscription Options

The first step in the process is to visit www.office.com.

There are two options available:

  • For home
  • For business

Click on the relevant option for your needs.

If you choose the home button then you will see a list of three options:

  1. Office 365 home
  2. Office 365 personal
  3. Office home and student

The Office 365 home option comes with a "try now" button as well as a "buy now" button whereas the other two options only have the "buy now" option.

Office 365 home allows installation on 5 computers whereas Office 365 personal only allows the installation on 1. The student version has fewer tools available.

If you choose the business button then you will see this list of options:

  1. Office 365 Business
  2. Office 365 Business Premium
  3. Office 365 Business Essentials

Office 365 Business has the full office suite and cloud storage but does not come with email. Office 365 Business Premium has the full office suite, cloud storage, business email and other services. The essentials package has the business email but no office suite.
