Restore Outlook Express or Windows Live Mail Rules

Restoring your email filters is easy from a Windows Live Mail backup.

If you have made a backup copy of your Windows Live Mail, Windows Mail or Outlook Express mail filters, you can recover them from the saved file. It can require some work, but work well worth your while: it will end with a new Windows Live Mail, Windows Mail or Outlook Express equipped with all your old mail rules.

Restore Windows Live Mail or Windows Mail Mail Rules

To recover or import your Windows Live Mail or Windows Mail email filters from a backup copy:

  1. Double-click on "Mail Rules.reg" in Windows Explorer.
  2. Click Yes.
  3. Click OK.

Restore Outlook Express Mail Rules

To import or restore mail rules in Outlook Express from a backup copy:

  1. Open Notepad.
  2. Select File | Open from the menu.
  3. Locate and open the "Mail Rules.reg" file that contains your backup mail rules.
  4. Highlight the string contained in braces ("{}"), following "[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\­Identities\" in the second line. Make sure you highlight the string including the braces.
  5. Hit Ctrl-C.
  6. Select Edit | Replace from the menu.
  7. Click in the Find what entry field and hit Ctrl-V.
  8. Go to the Outlook Express settings in the Windows registry.
  9. Click on the Identities key in the tree in the left pane.
  10. Double-click on Default User ID in the right pane.
  11. Hit Ctrl-C.
  12. Hit Esc.
  13. Go back to Notepad.
  14. Click in the Replace with entry field.
  15. Hit Ctrl-V.
  16. Click Replace All.
  17. Hit Esc.
  18. Close Notepad saving the changes to the file.
  19. Double-click on "Mail Rules.reg" in Windows Explorer.
  20. Click Yes.
