The stationery folder is where Outlook and Outlook Express look for stationery by default. Unfortunately, finding this folder on your disk can be a bit tricky. But every system has a stationery folder, and you will find it if you follow these instructions.

The following is for Outlook Express. Windows Mail (Windows Vista and later) has a stationery folder as well, but the steps to locate it differ.

Identify Your Outlook Express Stationery Folder

To identify the folder Outlook Express uses for stationery by default:

  • Select Run... from the Start menu.
  • Type "regedit".
  • Press Return.
  • Press Ctrl-F.
  • Type "Stationery Folder".
  • Press Return.
  • Double-click on the key.
    • it should be under \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Stationery.
  • The highlighted value is your Outlook Express stationery folder.

To open your Outlook Express stationery folder in Windows Explorer:

  • Hit Ctrl-C to copy the path to your Outlook Express stationery folder.
  • Select Run... from the Start menu.
  • Press Ctrl-V.
  • Press Return.

If you prefer not to touch the Windows registry, you can look for your Outlook Express stationery folder "manually:"

  • If you use an English version of Windows, the path to the Outlook Express stationery folder is "\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Stationery\" on the drive where Windows is installed, most probably C: (the full path then is "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Stationery\"). If your Windows is installed on a different drive, the path will vary accordingly ("E:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Stationery\" if Windows is on the E: drive, for example).
  • If you use a localized version of Windows, you need to look for your language's equivalent of "\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Stationery\" on the drive where Windows is installed. On a German Windows installation on drive C:, this would be "C:\Programme\Gemeinsame Dateien\Microsoft Shared\Stationery\", for example. Note that "\Microsoft Shared\Stationery\" is not translated.
