HT-S5800 Home Theater-in-a-Box System

The Receiver

The HT-S5800 is an all-in-one package that consists of a Home Theater Receiver (HT-R494) and a specially designed speaker system (HTP-594) in which the two front speakers include front firing speakers for the main left and right channels, as well as vertically firing speakers for the needed height channels when using the system in Dolby Atmos mode in a 5.1.2 channel configuration.

Although the inclusion of Dolby Atmos is the big bonus of this system, the HTR-494 also provides decoding for most Dolby and DTS surround sound formats and has a lot of other features.

Physical connectivity includes 4 3D pass-through, Audio Return Channel, and 4K pass-through compatible HDMI inputs with analog-to-HDMI conversion (no upscaling). However, although the HDMI inputs are 4K compatible, they are not HDR compatible.

Non-HDMI connections include composite and component (for video) as well as analog stereo, digital coaxial, digital optical for audio. A USB port is included that allows access to music files from iPods, iPhones, or USB flash drives.

HT-R494 also has a built-in Zone A/Zone B switch that allows you to send audio to another location but limited to the same source you have in your main setup.

For additional content access flexibility, the HT-R494 also includes Bluetooth, which allows direct streaming from compatible portable devices, such as many smartphones and tablets. Also, although network and internet streaming capability is not built-in, provisions are included that allows connection of third party media streaming sticks (Roku, Amazon Fire, Google Chromecast, etc...).

The Speakers

To complete the HT-S5800 Home-Theater-in-a-Box system, as mentioned above, a set of speakers (HTP-594) is provided that allows a 5.1.2 channel configuration optimized for Dolby Atmos. The seven available channels are incorporated into 5 speaker cabinets - five channels provide sound in the horizontal plane at ear level: center, main, surround), a subwoofer channel (.1), while two channels provide for vertical sound (.2).

The speaker system incorporates bass reflex design for the center and main speakers, but the front left and right speakers have a slight variation - the forward firing speakers feature bass reflex designs, but the vertically firing speakers are acoustic suspension (sealed cabinet) designed.

The surround speakers are acoustic suspension types and are more compact with traditional front firing drivers, and to round out the system, Onkyo supplies 10-inch down-firing subwoofer with front an additional front-facing port for extended bass response.

The stated power output rating for the entire HT-S5800 system is 65 WPC (measured using 20 Hz to 20 kHz test tones, 2 channels driven, at 8 Ohms, with 0.7% THD).

For more details on what the above-stated power ratings mean with respect to real-world conditions, refer to our reference article: Understanding Amplifier Power Output Specifications.

To make the whole system easier to get up and running, Onkyo includes its AccuEQ Room Acoustic Calibration system. Just plug in the provided microphone. The receiver will send specific audio test tones to each speaker. The tones are received by the microphone and sent back to the receiver. The receiver then determines the proper speaker output levels so that your system is balanced with your room's acoustic properties, size, and distance to your listening position.

SKS-HT594 Dolby Atmos Speaker System

In addition to the HT-S5800 Home-Theater-in-a-Box system, Onkyo is also offering the HT-S594 Dolby Atmos-enabled Speaker System for those may already own a Dolby Atmos-enabled home theater receiver, but haven't yet added a Dolby Atmos speaker setup to go with it.

The SKS-HT594 comes with five compact physical speaker cabinets similar in appearance to the speaker system that included with the HT-S5800 Home Theater-in-a-Box System profiled above (front left, center, front right, left surround, and right surround), with the front speaker cabinets housing both front firing speakers for the main left and right channels, and a vertically firing speaker for the Dolby Atmos height channels.

The subwoofer included in the system features a 10-inch driver, supported by a front facing port and 120-watt amplifier.
