How to Watch the Emmys Live Stream

From the red carpet to the awards, stream every moment of the Emmys

The Primetime Emmy Awards, affectionately known as the Emmys, are held in late September each year, typically on a Sunday. This star-studded event celebrates the best that prime time television has to offer, and it's always a great show, even when there's no host. Whether you tune in to see if your favorite shows go home with awards, or to see what everyone is wearing, you don't want to miss a single minute.

You can watch the whole show for free if you have an antenna or a cable subscription, but cord cutters aren't left out in the cold. If you've left traditional television behind and stream your shows, you can use the same basic methods to watch the entire Emmy Awards live stream from your computer, tablet, smartphone, or even on your television with a compatible streaming device.

How to Watch the Emmy Awards Live Stream

ABC owns the rights to air the Primetime Emmys, but that doesn't mean you need an antenna or cable subscription to watch. Cord cutters have a number of options to stream the whole ceremony online.

ABC.com

If you're stuck at your computer or have a laptop handy, but there's no television in sight, you can head over to ABC.com to stream the Emmys. This option does require a cable or satellite subscription, but it is a great option if you're unable to sit in front of your TV for the entire awards ceremony.

To stream the Primetime Emmys on ABC.com, go to the site in your browser of choice and select Watch Live. Verify your satellite or cable subscription if prompted, and you should be good to go. Return on the day of the ceremony, and you'll get the live stream.

ABC App

If you have a cable or satellite subscription, you can also stream the Primetime Emmys to your phone, tablet, or even television streaming device with the ABC app. The ABC app is available for iOSAndroidAmazon Fire, Apple TV, Android TV, Roku, and more.

Once you have the ABC app on your device, you'll need to provide your cable or satellite credentials to gain access to a live stream of current ABC programming. Launch the app on the day of the ceremony, and you'll be able to stream it live.

Other Ways to Live Stream the Emmys

In addition to the official ABC.com site, you can also live stream your local ABC channel and the Primetime Emmy Awards through a number of popular streaming services. These live television streamers work by making deals with local stations, so this option is only available if your local ABC station is onboard with one or more of these services.

Most of these services have some type of free trial, so make sure to sign up a little early and make sure that ABC actually works in your area. If a service doesn't have ABC, you won't be able to stream the Emmys.

AT&T TV NOW

AT&T TV Now was previously known as DirecTV Now, and it has all of the same channels. They're able to provide ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, and many others in most areas.

HULU+ LIVE TV

Hulu + Live TV pairs one of the most popular streaming services with live television. It offers local ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC channels in most areas, and also carries cable channels like ESPN, and more. They have a 30-day free trial.

YOUTUBE TV

YouTube TV is a live television streaming service from Google that also offers on-demand content and a cloud-based DVR. They offer ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, and more in most areas. They offer a free trial as well.

SLING TV

Sling TV only offers NBC and Fox in a limited number of markets, so this isn't a good choice for the Emmys. A free trial is available, but save it for something that airs on NBC or Fox.

Live streaming television from ABC is only available from these providers in participating markets. Make sure to check availability in your area well in advance of the Emmys.

If the Official Emmy Awards Live Stream Isn't Available

If you live in an area where ABC isn't available through ABC.com or any of the available streaming service, then there's no official way to stream the Emmy Awards. In that case, you may need to turn to less official means to watch the awards.

Unofficial streams are less reliable and usually lower in quality, but they do exist. Sources like Ace Stream allow you to stream events like the Emmys straight from other viewers, and other sites provide similar streams that you can watch without downloading anything at all. If you want to use this method, wait until the day of the Emmy Awards and search the internet for Emmys Ace Stream content IDs or unofficial Emmys live streams.

Stick to trusted sources for your Ace Stream content IDs and unofficial live streams when possible. Before visiting unfamiliar sites in your search for this type of content, install a good ad blocker and antivirus program. Look out for malicious pop up ads, and never provide your email address or credit card number. Use these sorts of services at your own risk.

Use a VPN to Watch the Emmys Online

Lots of television streaming services, and even ABC.com itself, are region locked. That can make it difficult or impossible to use these services if you live in a restricted area. To get around these restrictions and stream the Emmys, you may want to consider using a virtual private network (VPN).

Don't have a VPN yet? Check out our list of the best VPNs to find a great one.

Some VPNs are great at getting around region locks, and others aren't. And even when you can get around a region lock, you may find that a streaming service demands your billing address match your physical location and also be inside a supported geographical area. That means VPNs aren't foolproof, but this method is still worth a try.

Emmy Awards Red Carpet Pre-Show Live Stream

The Emmys pre-show red carpet coverage goes live at 3:30 p.m. PT/6:30 p.m. ET, and you can watch on the Fox live stream. Additional coverage has been available in the past from EW and E!, so keep your eyes peeled as the ceremony draws closer.

You can check out the Emmys Where to Watch page for more information, but the show is not available to stream on that site.
