ITunes gift cards are extremely popular gifts. Whether they're given for birthdays, holidays, as thank yous or for promotions, everyone loves to receive them. What's not to love? It's free money to shop for your favorite music, movies, books, games, apps and more at the iTunes Store.

Here's how to redeem an iTunes gift card, credit your iTunes Store account, and start shopping if you're lucky enough to receive one!

  • Reveal the code: Turn over your iTunes gift card and scratch off the section on the back above the bar code. This will reveal the code you must enter at the iTunes Store to redeem the card.
  • Go to the iTunes store: Now go to the iTunes Store. Make sure you have an Apple ID/iTunes account. If you don't, create one.
  • Click "Redeem" in the "Account" menu: You'll find it at the top left of your iTunes page. You may be asked to log into your iTunes account.

You have two options on the Redeem Code page for how you'll credit your account with the money from the gift card.

  • Simply type in the code you revealed when you scratched off the back of the card. When the "Redeem" button appears, click it.
  • If your card has a focus box around the redemption code, you can use your computer's built-in camera to scan the card and redeem it without typing. Click "Use Camera," then hold the iTunes gift card up to the camera when it turns on. The back of the card showing the focus box must face the camera. iTunes will recognize the card and scan the code, adding the amount of the card directly to your account.

Apple products that support the camera feature include any Mac or Apple with a built-in FaceTime camera running Mac OS X 10.8.3 or later and iTunes 11 or later. Your device's camera should also be able to perform this function in iOS 7 and later via the iTunes or App Store apps.

Confirm Redemption

A screen will pop up in iTunes that confirms you've redeemed the card and added its dollar value to your account. You can also confirm this by looking at the top left corner of the iTunes Store window where it shows your account name.

A dollar amount appears next to your account name – this is the amount left on your gift card. When you begin making purchases, they're debited from the balance there and are only billed to your regular account after your gift card has been depleted.

Now that you've got some money in your iTunes account, let's spend it:
