How to Use Fitbit Versa

This is not the Fitbit you might already know

The Fitbit Versa can do more than just tracking your steps. If you're new to the world of smartwatches, there are a few quick things you can do to get started before using one to track your fitness goals, keep you connected to your messages and calls, and much more. Here’s how to use a Fitbit Versa.

The instructions in this article apply to the Fitbit Versa, Fitbit Versa 2, and Fitbit Versa 3 smartwatches. While some of these instructions may work for the Fitbit Versa Lite, it's not as fully functional as other members of the Versa line.

How to Setup Fitbit Versa

Setting up the Versa is a fast and simple process. Here's how to do it:

  1. Turn on and charge your device. You can get a full day of battery life in just 12 minutes with fast charging.

  2. Download the Fitbit app for your smartphone.

  3. Open the app and tap Log-in or Create Account. If you already have a Fitbit account, you won't need to create a new one.

  4. The app may walk you through the process of connecting your new Versa watch automatically. If it doesn't, you can tap the Account icon and tap + Set up a Device.

  5. Choose the device you’re setting up.

  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the device setup. Your watch automatically syncs with the Fitbit app on your phone or tablet. Your watch and your phone must use the same Wi-Fi network for the setup and syncing process.

You need to enter some personal details and agree to the Terms of Service, then put your Versa onto the charging cradle to complete the device setup. You may also need to update the Versa's firmware. This can take up to half an hour to complete, so be patient.

What Do the Buttons on a Fitbit Versa Do?

Once your Fitbit Versa is set up, and you're sure you're wearing it right, then you can start using it. If you're using a Fitbit Vera, there are three buttons on the device—one on the left and two on the right.

  • The left button is the Back button. When you long-press this, it opens the Quick Settings where you can control your music, among other things. The buttons on the right control apps.
  • By default, a quick press of the top right button controls the top-left app on the first app screen. A long-press opens your notifications.
  • The bottom right button opens the app located on the bottom left of the first app screen.

To change which apps either of these buttons access, rearrange the apps on your first app page.

There's only one button on the Fitbit Versa 2. This is the Back button, and a short press takes you to the previous screen. You can set what you want the button to do on a long press in the Fitbit app on your phone.

Enable Fitbit Notifications For Messages, Calls, and More

Your Versa is more than just a fitness tracker. Sure, you can connect with the app on your smartphone and use it to track the number of steps you take each day, the exercises you do, your heart rate, and sleep cycles. But you can also use it to stay connected.

In the Fitbit app, you can set it up so you're notified on your watch when text messages and phone calls come in. To set this feature up:

  1. In the Fitbit app, tap the Today tab  > your profile picture > your device image > Notifications.

Other Things You Can Do With Fitbit Versa

There's much more you can do with your Fitbit Versa. From adding Fitbit Pay (not all Fitbit Versas support it) to adding music and apps or games, the Fitbit Versa solidly meets the definition of a smartwatch. You can even swap out clock faces or change the band on your Versa to match your outfit or your mood. All of these features mean you can stay connected while tracking your fitness goals and activities and so much more.
