If you have an iTunes Gift Certificate, you probably received your gift in an email message or were given a printed certificate personalized just for you. An iTunes Gift Certificate works in the same way as the popular iTunes Gift Card. Each certificate has a unique redemption code printed on it.

Your iTunes Gift Certificate is just like any type of store gift card, and it works in exactly the same way as an iTunes gift card. After you enter the redemption code into iTunes, your account is credited with a prepaid dollar amount. You can then use the credit for purchases that include digital music, apps, audiobooks, iBooks, and more on Apple's iTunes Store or the App Store.

How to Redeem an iTunes Gift Certificate

Here's how to redeem your gift certificate:

  1. Confirm that you have the latest version of the iTunes software, If you don't, update it. If you don't have an Apple ID account or the iTunes software, download the latest version from Apple's iTunes website and create an Apple ID.

  2. Open iTunes on your computer and click the Store tab at the top of the iTunes screen.

  3. Click Redeem in the Music Quick Links section on the right side of the screen.

  4. Enter your Apple ID when prompted to do so to open the Redeem Code screen.

  5. Enter the code. You can type it in manually in the area provided or use your computer's camera to capture the bar code on the certificate.

  6. Click the Redeem button.

When the code is accepted, the credit is added to your iTunes Store account. The amount is shown near the top right corner of the Store screen. Each time you make a purchase in iTunes or the App Store, the amount is subtracted from your account balance, and the new balance is displayed.
