When people mostly used the iPhone for communication, games, and music and movies, features like printing didn't matter very much. But as the device has become a business tool that companies and their employees use all day every day, traditional business functions—like printing—have become more important.

Apple's solution for printing from the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch is a technology called AirPrint. Since the iPhone doesn't have a USB port, it can't connect to printers with cables like a desktop or laptop computer. Instead, AirPrint is a wireless technology built into every device that runs the iOS operating system that uses Wi-Fi and compatible printers to let you print from the iPhone.

Requirements for Using AirPrint

  • An iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 4.2 or higher
  • An AirPrint-compatible printer (not all printers support AirPrint, so check Apple's list before you buy)
  • A Wi-Fi network that both the iOS device and printer are connected to (since both devices must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network, you can't print from your iPhone at work to your printer at home, for example)
  • An app that supports AirPrint.

How to Use AirPrint

Assuming you've met the requirements above, here's how to use AirPrint:

  1. Open, or create, the document (or photo, email, etc.) that you want to print.

  2. Tap the action box (the square with the arrow coming out of the top).

  3. In the menu that pops up from the bottom of the screen, tap Print.

If you don't see it, try swiping right to left along the bottom set of icons to reveal more options. If you still don't see it, the app may not support printing.
