Snapchat is meant to be one of those "in the moment" social apps. An option to upload existing photos or videos to Snapchat from your device wasn't always available, so if you wanted to send a photo or a video to anybody on Snapchat, your only option was to capture it through the camera tab directly within the app.

In July of 2016, Snapchat introduced a new feature called Memories that allowed users to save their snaps and also upload photos and videos from the default camera folder on their devices. It may not make the app seem as raw, unedited and spontaneous to use, but if Snapchat is going to stand any chance against other big social apps like Instagram, then it's probably a necessary option.

Accessing Your Camera Roll Through Snapchat Memories

Snapchat Memories can be accessed by navigating to the camera tab within the app and tapping on the small circle located directly beneath the camera button. Your Memories will slide up from the bottom of the screen.

If you've saved snaps that you've taken through the app, then you'll see them here. You'll need to look at the menu options at the top of your saved snaps and tap the one that labeled Camera Roll.

You may need to give Snapchat permission to access your camera roll if you haven't already. On this tab, you'll see a grid of thumbnails featuring all the most recent photos and videos in your device's camera roll.

You can scroll through your camera roll using Snapchat Memories and tap any photo or video to view it in full screen. Swipe down on the photo or video when you're done viewing it.

To actually select a photo or a video to send, tap the little checkmark icon in the top right corner of the screen and then tap on a photo or video that you want to send (or post as a story). A little checkmark will appear over it to confirm that it's been selected.

You can actually select multiple photos and videos at once to send or post them all at one time. This save you from having to send or post multiple photos or videos from your camera roll one by one.

Send Your Photo or Video to Friends or Post It As a Story

Once you've selected what you'd like to send from your camera roll, tap the arrow button in the lower right corner of the screen. This will take you to your friend list where you can select the friends you want to send your message to or post it as a story.

Unfortunately, Snapchat currently doesn't allow users to edit the photos or videos they decide to upload and share from their camera roll. Photos and videos that were taken through the Snapchat app and then saved to Memories, on the other hand, can be edited with captions, filters, emoji and more so that they can be sent/posted later or again.
