How to Unsubscribe From a Magazine or App on Your iPad

Screenshot of Apple ID Settings

While Apple makes it very easy to subscribe to magazines and apps, cancelling the auto-renewal of a subscription is an elaborate game of hide and seek. Just like a cable company wanting to hold on to your subscription as long as possible, Apple does their best to hide this option. But we'll help you thwart them.

The option to cancel an app subscription or a magazine auto-renewal is buried in the Settings app.

So if you are trying to cancel your HBO Now subscription, and you've been hunting through HBO Now's menu system, you've been searching in the wrong place.

  • First, open your iPhone or iPad's Settings
  • The very top option in settings is your Apple ID account with your name and contact photo. Tap this selection to get to your account page.
  • Tap iTunes & App Store.
  • The first selection on this screen reads "Apple ID:" followed by your Apple ID's email address. Tap it to bring up the Apple ID menu.
  • On the Apple ID menu, tap View Apple ID. You will be asked to verify by entering your Apple ID (iTunes/App Store) password or you can use Touch ID to enter these settings.
  • Scroll down the Account Settings and tap Subscriptions.
  • Tap the subscription you want to cancel.
  • Scroll all the way to the bottom and tap Cancel Subscription.

Remember, subscriptions apply to your entire account. So if you are unsubscribing from a magazine or service on your iPad, you will also be canceling it on your iPhone and other devices connected to your Apple ID.
