How to Cancel Subscriptions and Auto-Renewals on Your iPad

While Apple makes it very easy to subscribe to magazines and apps, cancelling the auto-renewal of a subscription is an elaborate game of hide and seek, with Apple doing their best to hide the option, and most of us left seeking the answer via the web because they've done such a good job of hiding it.   But the pot of gold at the end of this rainbow is that -- once you actually find out where to go -- the process is actually quite easy.

The option to cancel an app subscription or a magazine auto-renewal is actually buried in the App Store. So if you are trying to cancel your HBO Now subscription, and you've been hunting through HBO Now's menu system or scanning the iPad's Settings app for a subscriptions option, you've been searching in the wrong place.

  • First, launch the App Store on your iPad.
  • Next, go to the Featured tab.
  • Scroll down to the bottom and tap on the button that reads "Apple ID:" followed by the email address you use to sign into the iPad.
  • When you tap this button, a pop-up menu appears.  Choose the "View Apple ID" option.
  • You may need to enter your password to proceed.
  • In the Account Settings, scroll down until you see a section titled "Subscriptions".  If you are unsubscribing to a magazine or an app like HBO Now, tap the "Manage" button in this section.  If you are unsubscribing to iTunes Match, tap the green on/off button next to "iTunes Match Renewal".
  • In the Manage Subscriptions section, tap the subscription you want to change.  If you are only subscribing to one service, you will automatically be brought into the settings for that service.
  • In this final screen, you will see an on-off button next to "Auto-Renewal".  Simply tap the button and the iPad will ask you to confirm that you want to cancel the subscription.  Once confirmed, you are good to go.

Remember, subscriptions apply to your entire account.  So if you are unsubscribing from a magazine or service on your iPad, you will also be canceling it on your iPhone and other devices connected to your Apple ID.
