How to Uninstall McAfee

If your computer came with McAfee software preinstalled or you have simply decided to choose another antivirus program to protect your PC, you can remove McAfee without much effort using your computer’s settings. If you should run into problems uninstalling the software, you can also remove it using the McAfee removal tool.

The following steps apply to Windows 10, 8, and 7 as well as macOS 10.12 or later.

Uninstall McAfee in Windows 10 Using Settings

  1. Type Settings in the Windows Search box and then click Settings in the search results.

  2. Click Apps in Windows Settings.

  3. Type McAfee in the search box and select the McAfee product you want to remove. 

    If there are multiple McAfee applications on your computer and you want to remove all McAfee software, you will need to uninstall one at a time. 

  4. Click Uninstall.

  5. Click Uninstall again to confirm that you do want to remove the software. 

  6. Confirm that you want to proceed if Windows requests your permission to continue. 

  7. Once Windows uninstalls the software, you can then close the Settings window.

  8. Restart your computer and make sure the program was uninstalled.

Remove McAfee in Windows 8 Using Settings

  1. Click Start in the Charms bar or press the Windows key to access the programs installed on your computer. 

  2. Right-click the McAfee product you want to remove and click Uninstall. The Programs and Features window opens. 

  3. Select the McAfee product you want to remove.

    If there are multiple McAfee applications on your computer and you want to remove all McAfee software, you will need to uninstall one at a time. 

  4. Click the Uninstall/Change button.

  5. Click Uninstall again to confirm that you do want to remove the software. 

  6. Confirm that you want to proceed if Windows requests your permission to continue. 

  7. Wait while Windows uninstalls the software and then close the Programs and Features window.

  8. Restart your computer and make sure the program was uninstalled.

Uninstall McAfee in Windows 7 Using Settings

  1. Click Start.

  2. Click Control Panel.

  3. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.

  4. Click on the McAfee product you want to remove. 

    If there are multiple McAfee applications on your computer and you want to remove all McAfee software, you will need to uninstall one at a time. 

  5. Click the Add/Remove or Change/Remove button.

  6. Click Remove.

  7. Confirm that you want to proceed if Windows requests your permission to continue. 

  8. Wait while Windows uninstalls the software and then close the window.

  9. Restart your computer and make sure the program was uninstalled.

Remove McAfee in Windows Using the McAfee Removal Tool

If you are unable to remove the software through your computer’s settings, you can use the McAfee Removal Tool to complete the task. 

  1. Download the MCPR Tool from the McAfee website.

  2. Double-click MCPR.exe after the download is complete. 

  3. Click Yes, Continue, or Run if a security warning appears. The McAfee Software Removal Tool opens.

  4. Click Next on the McAfee Software Removal screen.

  5. Click Agree on the End User License Agreement (EULA) page.

  6. Enter the characters shown on the Security Validation screen, then click Next.

  7. Wait for the tool to remove the software. It might take several minutes.

  8. Click Restart when you see the Removal Complete message.

Save any work before restarting your computer. Any unsaved work will be lost. 


Uninstall McAfee from a Mac

  1. Find and open the Applications folder in the dock.

  2. Open the McAfee Internet Security Uninstaller app.

  3. Select the Uninstall SiteAdvisor check box to remove the McAfee browser add-on.

  4. Click Continue

  5. Enter your administrator password and click OK.

  6. Click Finish when the uninstallation is complete.
