How to Turn on a Vizio TV Without a Remote

Can't find the power button? No problem; use a Vizio TV Remote App

Vizio TVs do not require a remote to turn on or off.

Vizio

The majority of modern Vizio televisions have smart features, but this means physical buttons are not always necessary. This has led to many users finding themselves unable to turn on their televisions without a remote. Despite what many may think, all Vizio televisions have physical buttons, and there are numerous other ways to turn on the television. Here's how to turn on your Vizio TV without a remote.

Turn on Vizio TV Without Remote Using Physical Buttons

All Vizio televisions have buttons on the TV itself, but they may be in unorthodox places, making them hard to find. You'll typically find the buttons on the back of the TV in the bottom right or bottom left corner. This varies from model to model, but once you find the power button, you'll always be able to turn on the television without a remote.

Other Vizio TV Buttons

In addition to a power button, you will also find volume, channel, and input buttons on the back. The reason Vizio hides these buttons is twofold. The first reason concerns aesthetics. No one wants to see buttons anymore, and in the quest to minimize bezels, physical buttons have been relegated to the back.

The second reason is they're not meant to be used to navigate the television menus. The included remote or the smartphone app are both more efficient ways to use the television, so the physical buttons are meant to be a last resort.

Once you find the buttons on your television, it is a good idea to mark their location in case you forget and need to use them again. These buttons are also used if you have to perform a hard reset during any troubleshooting steps.

Turn on Vizio TV Using the SmartCast App

The simplest way to turn on your television when you've lost or misplaced the remote is through the Vizio SmartCast app for iOS and Android.

  1. Locate and download the Vizio SmartCast app from either the Google Play store or the App Store, depending on your device.

  2. If this is your first time using the app, you'll need to pair it. Tap Devices > Add in the upper-right corner. You'll be prompted to hold your phone near the device for a short time.

  3. Once paired, tap the Control icon at the bottom of the screen.

  4. Tap Devices in the upper-right corner and choose your display from the list.

  5. Once selected, you can control the television as if your smartphone is the remote, from turning it on or off to controlling the volume, channel, aspect ratio, and much more.

You don't have to open the app to turn on the television. If the TV is off, streaming anything from your smartphone to the TV will cause it to automatically turn on.

How to Turn on Your Vizio TV With a PS4

If you're an avid gamer, you might want to streamline the process of jumping into a game. Here's how to make your television turn on just by starting up a game console.

  1. Connect your PlayStation 4 console to the Vizio television using an HDMI cable and start it up.

  2. Select Settings > System.

  3. Select Enable HDMI Device Link.

  4. When you turn on your PlayStation 4, the Vizio TV will now automatically power on and switch to the correct input. In addition, selecting that input from the list will automatically turn on the PlayStation 4.

How to Turn on Your Vizio TV With the Nintendo Switch

The process is slightly different for Nintendo Switch users.

  1. Connect your Nintendo Switch console to the Vizio television via the dock.

  2. Select System Settings > TV Settings.

  3. Scroll down the list and select Match TV Power State to turn it on.

  4. When you put your console to sleep, the input will switch off. When you power the console on, the TV will automatically switch to the proper input channel.

A Note on HDMI-CEC and Xbox One

Unfortunately for Xbox players, there's no way to enable HDMI-CEC. While the Xbox can control the television, it does so through the use of an IR blaster and the Xbox Kinect, a peripheral item no longer produced by Microsoft. Why the console doesn't support this functionality is unclear, but fans have asked for it to be added since the Xbox's release.
