How to Turn off Autoplay on Facebook

Don't be caught off guard by videos playing automatically

You're scrolling through Facebook in a waiting room, at the library, or at work when a video post starts to play rather loudly. This could be embarrassing and possibly troublesome. Learn how to turn off autoplay on Facebook so that this never happens again.

When you disable Facebook video autoplay, you can still watch any videos you choose by selecting the Play icon on the screen. You can turn off autoplay on a computer or mobile device.

How to Stop Videos From Automatically Playing on Facebook

Change your video autoplay settings on Facebook from a browser on any computer.

Turning off Facebook Autoplay in a web browser doesn't affect the settings in the Facebook mobile app.

  1. Select the down arrow in the upper-right corner of Facebook.

  2. Click Settings & Privacy.

  4. Select Videos at the bottom of the left pane.

  5. Select the drop-down menu to the right of Auto-Play Videos, then select Off.

How to Turn off Autoplay on the Facebook App for iOS or Android

To disable Facebook video autoplay on an iOS device, you must do so from within the app.

  1. Select the hamburger menu (☰) in the lower-right corner of the screen.

  2. Select Settings & Privacy.

  3. Tap Settings.

  4. Scroll down to Media and Contacts and select Videos and Photos.

    If you don't see Videos and Photos in the iPhone's Facebook app settings, update the app.

  5. Tap Autoplay.

  6. Select Never Autoplay Videos.
