How to Transfer Your iTunes Library to a New Computer

Courtesy of Apple

Fortunately Apple sells most of its digital music these days in the iTunes Plus format. This means that you can use your purchased music without any restrictions. However, what if you've got a collection of DRM copy protected songs, movies, etc., that you want to play on a new computer -- or even several? In this case, you'll first need to authorize each computer (up to a maximum of 5) to play your DRM'ed music library.

This authorization process doesn't have to be done if you have encoded your own AAC files by ripping audio CDs using iTunes -- just for the DRM protected ones. To authorize a computer, follow the steps below:

Difficulty: Easy

Time Required: Copying Music Library to New Computer: Depends on Size / Authorization Process: 3 Mins Max.

Here's How:

  1. If you haven't already got the iTunes software installation package, you can download the latest version from Apple's iTunes website.

  2. Launch the iTunes software. If you've previously used iTunes to backup your music library, then you can use it to easily restore your songs by simply inserting your storage media.

If you haven't used iTunes to backup and have copied the entire iTunes library folder to an external hard drive, flash drive, etc., then click File and choose Add Folder to Library. Navigate to where the folder is stored on your external device, highlight it, and then click OK.

  1. Click the iTunes Store menu option (under Store) in the left window pane. Once the store has loaded, log into your account by clicking the Sign In button.

  2. click the Store menu tab at the top of the screen and select the Authorize This Computer... option.

If you have reached the iTunes authorization limit of 5 and need to remove old or dead computers from your Apple ID, then be sure to read our article on how to deauthorize all computers simultaneously.

  1. Type in your log-in details and click the Authorize button. After a while you should get a dialog box saying that the computer authorization was successful and details of how many computers (out of 5) have been authorized. Click OK.

What You Need:

  • iTunes software
  • iTunes library
  • Backup media or device
  • iTunes account with less that 5 computers authorized
