How to Stop Windows 10 Pop up Ads

You can block ads in your web browser using an integrated pop-up blocker or third-party ad-blocking software applications. However, if you are seeing random pop up ads on your Windows 10 computer even when you're not browsing the web, those tactics will not work.

Block Pop-Ups in Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge is the default internet browser in Windows 10. If you are noticing pop-up ads when MS Edge is running, you can quickly disable them.

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.

  2. Click the Settings and More ellipsis at the right end of the toolbar. Alternatively, press the keyboard shortcut Alt+X.

  3. Click Settings near the bottom of the drop-down menu.

  4. Select Privacy and Security, which is represented by a padlock icon in the left pane of the Settings menu.

Stop File Explorer Ads

You might encounter ads for OneDrive or Microsoft 365 as you browse files and folders on your Windows 10 computer. If you find them annoying, you can put a stop to them.

  1. Press Win+E on your keyboard to open the File Explorer window.

  2. Click the View tab.

  3. Select Options and choose Change Folder and Search Options. The Folder Options dialog box will open.

  5. Scroll through the list of options in the Advanced settings section.

  6. Clear the Show Sync Provider Notifications checkbox.

  8. Close the window and exit File Explorer.

Stop Windows 10 Lock Screen Ads

The lock screen helps protect your computer, but you might see ads there, as well. Here's how to get rid of those pop-ups.

  1. Go to Start > Settings.

  2. Select Personalization.

Stop Push Notification Pop-Ups

You might see ads in Windows 10 notifications disguised as suggestions. You can disable these, as well.

  1. Go to Start > Settings.

  2. Select System.

Stop/Start Menu Ads

If you encounter a Start Menu ad, you can disable them all by right-clicking the ad and selecting Turn Off All Suggestions. If you don't want to wait until you see an ad, you can disable them in Settings.

  1. Click Start > Settings > Personalization.

  2. Select Start in the left pane.
