How to Rename AirPods

By default, your AirPods are named "AirPods," but they don’t have to stay that way. It’s easy to learn how to change the name of your AirPods from your iPhone. It’s not just for vanity either, there are real reasons you'd want to make your AirPods more unique.

Why You Should Rename Your AirPods

There are a few really good reasons you should rename your AirPods:

  • Boring starting names: Everyone’s AirPods are initially named whatever name you've listed on your iPhone, followed by “AirPods.”
  • Prevent Mix-ups: If you have have multiple people in the house with AirPods, it can be easy to mix them up. Having a different name will help, at least a little bit.
  • Identifying lost AirPods: All AirPods are white and look identical, so changing the name is one of the few ways to confirm a lost AirPods' identity.
  • Personality: You may just want to show off your personality with something funny or clever. It's ok to customize your AirPods and just have fun with them.

How to Rename Your AirPods

Your AirPods will need to be connected to your iPhone for this to work.

Changing the name is not a one-time event. You can change the name of your AirPods as often as you'd like.

  1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth.

  2. Under My Devices, tap the circled i next to your AirPods' name.

  3. Tap Name and enter a new name for your AirPods.

  4. Tap the back arrow in the top left corner to go back and see the name has changed.

    If you want to change the AirPods' name back to the default, you can reset your AirPods. Hold the button on the case for 3-5 seconds with the lid open until the light flashes. Close the lid and reopen it next to your iPhone, then reconnect.
