How to Find a Facebook Message Request

View Facebook messages from non-friends

To recover spam messages from Facebook Messenger, don't bother looking for a spam folder; Facebook messages from people you have not "friended" on the social networking site go into a Filtered Requests folder, apart from your regular messages. Facebook sends the messages there that it assumes you don't want, so they don't appear in the list of your regular, wanted messages from friends.

Not all messages Facebook sends to Filtered Requests are spam or junk. Some might be spam, but others might be from Facebook users you haven't friended yet. That's why Facebook doesn't call them "spam."

The quickest way to find these messages is to follow this link, which takes you directly to Facebook Messenger's Filtered Requests screen.

To access Filtered Requests from Facebook's main pages:

  1. Select Messages icon at the top right of your main Facebook page, or Messenger in the navigation panel at the left side.

  2. Select the Gear icon to the left of Messenger, at the top of the list of people who have sent you messages.

  3. Select Message Requests in the drop-down menu.

  4. Choose See Filtered Requests to see all the messages that Facebook has moved to this folder.

  5. Find the spam message you're looking for and accept the message request. This will move the conversation into the regular section of Messenger, where you can contact the user as you would any other. You also can copy the information if you don't want to reply immediately.

You can find message requests using the Facebook Messenger mobile app, too.

  4. Any requests and spam directed to this folder appear at the top of the resulting screen. To learn more about the sender, open the request; the sender will not know you viewed the message unless you accept the request. You can accept the request or click it for more information. You also can copy or delete it.
