A 3D photo can be a fun addition to your Facebook profile, provided you know how to post them. Here's all you need to know about 3D photos and how to upload such 3D images to your Facebook account.

To post 3D photos, you need an iPhone with a dual-lens camera and Portrait Mode. That includes the iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR.

What Is a 3D Photo?

A 3D photo is a photo with extra depth. This is achieved by taking two pictures at the same time before laying them on top of each other. The iPhone's Portrait Mode captures the distance between the foreground and background of a subject in an image, before giving it a 3D style appearance when you look through your photos on Facebook.

How to Take a Great 3D Photo

Before you post a 3D image on Facebook, you need to take a great picture. Here are some essential tips on how best to do so:

  • Set your iPhone camera to Portrait Mode.
  • Ideally, stand 3-4 feet away from the subject of your photo.
  • Consider how the subject of your photo contrasts with the background. It's important the colors don't blend too much. A plain background is best for drawing out the 3D picture of the person or object.
  • Avoid photographing transparent objects. Items like plastic or glass won't look great no matter what you do. The texture of the thing you're taking a photo of really matters.
