Netflix What Netflix Is For those that may be not familiar with Netflix, it began as an online DVD rental service where users paid a monthly fee to have DVDs mailed to them. Eventually, the company morphed into an online movie and TV service that streams movies, original content, and TV shows directly to Netflix-enabled devices. It continues to offer the DVD-by-mail service on a separate site. Netflix offers a wide selection of archived domestic and international TV shows and movies (including a great selection of Asian, Bollywood, and Latin films), as well as critically acclaimed original programming. Netflix is accessible via the internet on an abundance of devices, including Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Google Chromecast and Apple TV (Gen 2 or later) media streamers, Smart TVs, Blu-ray Disc players, PS3/4 and Xbox game consoles, PCs, and even most smartphones and tablets. As of December 2, 2019, Netflix no longer works on 2010-11 or earlier smart TVs from Samsung, 2012-2014 Vizio Smart TVs running Internet Apps/Apps Plus, and several older Roku media streamers (SD N1050, HD XR N1101, HD N1100, 2000C, and XD models 2050X, 2050N, 2100X, 2100N). Other 2010-11 smart TVs and media streaming devices from other brands may also be affected. The Cost of Netflix In terms of subscription plans and related costs, there are a variety of options. Some are available on the main Netflix site; others are available elsewhere but still through Netflix. Below are the types of plans and monthly subscription prices available. Streaming Plans Basic (Standard Definition Only): One Netflix-enabled device can be used at any given time. You can also download titles to one smartphone or tablet – $8.99 per month.Standard (Standard and High Definition 480p, 720 or 1080p): Up to two devices can be used at the same time. You can also download titles to up to two phones or tablets – $12.99 per month.Premium (High Definition and Ultra HD 720p, 1080p, or 4K): Up to four devices can be used simultaneously) – $15.99 per month. With this plan, Netflix can be streamed in 4K provided the viewer has a compatible media streamer, smart TV, and the required broadband speed. With regards to device use: only the use of multiple devices simultaneously require the higher-priced plans. If you have multiple Netflix-enabled devices, but only use one device at a time with the Basic plan, no more than two devices at a time with the standard plan, or no more than four devices at a time with the Premium plan, you will not trigger any additional fees. If you try to use more devices than allowed you will receive a warning on your TV screen. DVD/Blu-ray-by-Mail Online Rental Plans This plan is available through the DVD.Netflix site. Starter: One disc per rental/Two discs per month – DVD 4.99, Blu-ray $5.99.Standard: One disc per rental/Unlimited discs per month – DVD 7.99, Blu-ray $9.99.Premier: Two discs per rental/Unlimited discs per month – DVD $11.99, Blu-ray $14.99. Netflix Gift Card Buying Options Netflix Netflix has made it easy to buy Gift Cards, and they can be redeemed for either the streaming or DVD/Blu-ray rental service. One option is to buy one at a participating retail store location such as Target, Walmart, and Kroger (prices may range from $15 to $100 dollars). In addition to making to trip the store, Netflix Gift Cards can also be purchased online through Walmart, Kroger, Game Stop, and PayPal. However, a more convenient way is to purchase gift cards online at Amazon.com. The above options and prices are for the U.S. To find out about pricing and delivery options in other regions of the World, go to the Official Netflix Gift Card Support page and select your country. Some of the participating countries include Canada, Mexico, the U.K., Germany, France, Brazil, Columbia, and Japan. Gift Card Redemption To redeem the subscription, the recipient goes to the Netflix Gift Card Redeem Page. Note that the recipient must register a method of payment. The payment method will be charged a nominal amount each month (probably just a few cents) to be sure it is still valid. This means that you can't give the subscription to someone who doesn't have a credit card or other way of paying to continue the subscription. However, subscriptions can be canceled at any time. The Bottom Line If you are looking for a great gift for someone that already has a Netflix-compatible device, or, better yet, if you are planning to give that special someone a media streamer, smart TV, or Blu-ray disc player as a gift, definitely consider also giving a Netflix gift card. It is a companion gift that will unlock a great source of internet streaming content that can be enjoyed for years to come.
