Virtual private networks (VPNs) are most commonly used for privacy and security concerns, but they can also be useful for unblocking regional content, like Netflix. If you want to set up and use a VPN on a PS4 to take advantage of any of those features, your console will need a little outside help. It isn't difficult, but it does require a computer or a compatible router to get things working.

Can You Use VPN on a PS4?

The PS4 wasn't designed for use with VPNs, so you can't install a VPN app directly on your console. In fact, there's no way to get a VPN working on a PS4 without a little outside help. You can still access blocked content, and protect your console with a VPN, but only with the assistance of a computer or VPN router.

These are the best options for using a VPN with a PS4:

  • Windows PC: With this method requires a Windows PC and a VPN that's compatible with Windows. You set the VPN up on the Windows computer, and then share the protected internet connection to your PS4 through an Ethernet cable.
  • Mac: This method is the same as Windows, but it uses a Mac and a VPN that's compatible with MacOS. You set the VPN up on your Mac, and then share the connection to your PS4 via an Ethernet cable.
  • Router: This method doesn't require a computer. Instead, you set the VPN up directly on your router. Some routers don't allow this, so you have to make sure that you have a VPN compatible router first. If you do, you can share the same VPN connection to every device on your network.

How to Use VPN on PS4 Through Your PC

If you have a Windows 10 PC, you can use it to connect your PS4 to a compatible VPN. To use this method, you'll need a VPN that's compatible with Windows, and a Windows 10 PC that has both Wi-Fi and an Ethernet jack, or two Ethernet jacks.

The basic idea behind this method is that you set the Windows PC up to use a compatible VPN, and then you connect your PS4 to the internet through that PC.

How to Connect Your PS4 to VPN Through a Mac

If you have a Mac, you can use it to connect your PS4 to a compatible VPN. This method works the same way as the Windows method, but you'll need a MacOS compatible VPN, and a Mac that has both Wi-Fi and an Ethernet jack, or two Ethernet jacks.

With those requirements, then set the VPN up on your Mac, and connect your PS4 to the internet through your Mac.

Here's how to connect a PS4 to VPN through a Mac:

  1. Connect your Mac and your Xbox One with an Ethernet cable.

  2. Click the apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, and select System Preferences > Sharing.

  3. Select Internet Sharing.

  4. Click the Share your connection from drop down menu, and select your VPN network.

  5. Click the To computers using drop down menu, and select Ethernet.

  6. Verify that your PS4 is connected to the internet by selecting Settings > Network > Test network connection.

How to Use VPN on PS4 Without a PC

If you don't want to connect your PS4 to the internet through a PC or Mac, the third option is to use a VPN router. This method works by setting the VPN up directly on your router, which results in every device on your network receiving the same level of protection.

This method is the best option if you have a VPN router, and you want every device you own to connect to the internet through your VPN.

Some routers allow you to pick and choose the devices that connect through the VPN, but that feature isn't universal. For more information, contact your router manufacturer.

Here's how to connect a PS4 to your VPN without a PC:

  1. Log in to the control panel of your router.

  2. Follow the procedure laid out by your VPN service provider, and set your router up to use the VPN.

You will typically need to enter information like an IP address, subnet mask, and login information into a page or tab called Basic, Network, or WAN Setup. Contact your VPN service provider for more information.

  3. Connect your PS4 to the router with either an Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi.

  4. Verify that your PS4 is connected to the internet by selecting Settings > Network > Test network connection.

Once your PS4 successfully connects to your router, it will automatically receive the same VPN benefits as every other device you connect.
